61.2 today in a charity ride. My longest ride before that was 46 a week ago. I was riding solo for about 40 miles since the A group took off on the front end and my B group dispersed behind me 20 miles in. Those last 20 miles were rough.

Picked up this to get through the winter on something that isn’t a trainer. Did a 3hr ride on it yesterday. Should be fun.

Nice SC. A buddy just picked up one for his new gravel bike.

I made a purchase this past week. A used 2024 Specialized Tarmac SL8 Pro. SRAM Force AXS V2. It was a deal that I couldn't pass up. 1/2 retail. I haven't told my wife, yet. She'll figure it out when the box arrives, if I don't intercept it first.

I didn't need it. I'm currently on a 2015 Felt FRD that is my first "real" bike, and it's great. Light, SRAM Red eTap, good wheels.

Like I said earlier-this sport can get expensive.

Nice, i may replace my aspero with a Stigmata next year. I “need” 50s on my gravel bike.

You’ll like it. I ride an SL7 on the road.

Haha, I just did the whole box interception exercise. She figured it out pretty quick though. “Umm who’s huge bike with different handlebars is that?!”

Riding around on my SS gravel with the 55c Rene Herse tires has been a game changer. Makes me hate my Crux and it's 38's. Now I'm thinking at least 50c on gravel as well. I'm debating using the parts off the Crux to build up a new frame I could run bigger tires or just selling it and getting something different.

I had 45 terra speeds squeezed on my Aspero but couldn't find any recently so had to go back to 40s. Awful.... Even 5mm makes a big difference

I was actually browsing SL7’s, but this SL8 was less expensive than a comparable SL7, and it has the Force D2 group set with power meter. I can buy some shorter crank arms and still be way ahead at this point.

Did my annual "come out of retirement" race this weekend at Gudrun MTB festival in Hot Springs. It was a rainy weekend, and the stages are a combination of pedally flow and steep rake and ride singletrack. Long day on the bike for only 10 minutes of racing. I took 2nd place in the 50+ category. I did manage to beat my "nemesis" (actually friend) who edged me out last year and took the top step. Some "new" old man took 1st.

I was pretty happy with how I rode, and I did best on the "gnarlier" stages. Good to have some confidence on the bike after my accident in Finale LIgure in June.

My son took 2nd in Pro, which covered the expenses for the weekend.

Nice! Mine is a Pro w/dura-ace. Those tarmacs are easy to ride fast

Hell yea, sounds like a good weekend. I’ll probably try to do a few marathon mtb races next year..

I've got one more year of enduro race support before my kid leaves the house, then I'm probably going to start moving to more XC and Marathon style riding and racing.

Looking into getting a roof rack for my Subaru Crosstrek this Christmas. Does anybody have any suggestions or input?

I’m leaning wheel-on Yakima Highroad, but I’m open to other ideas. (I don’t have a trailer hitch installed fwiw.)

I haven’t used the roof version, but my 1up hitch rack is about as good as it gets. I’d look at the roof mount model.

Converting a Mukluk to a SS gravel rig is a new one for me.

Looks fun.

I had a second kid a little over a month ago, and my first kid turned 2 in September. Needless to say things are a little slow on the bike these days.

Per Strava it looks like I have 1600 miles on the year, and 95% of that is 1 hour rips at 5-5:30am before work.

Hoping to have a strong December and get back into a few organized rides in 2025. I did slip into the Castell Grind again before it sold out, so for sure have that one on the books.

I'm itching for a new gravel bike. My Crux is great on mixed surface road/light gravel but sucks on long gravel rides where our gravel can get quite bumpy. It's limited to 38mm tires and I was fine with that until I built that Mukluk up with the 55mm tires. Those those 55mm tires on my mukluk are like clouds on gravel and an order of magnitude more comfortable but slow. Would a jump from 38 to 42-47mm tires provide a significant jump in comfort? Everything about my Crux is great... but I hate to drop 2-4k on a new bike with 42-47mm tires and find they didn't make as much difference as I hoped they would.

I can absolutely say yes it makes a difference.

I'm running 38mm gravel kings right now because I'm 95% road, but previously I was running 43mm gravel kings and it makes a huge difference on gravel, and low-to-no noticeable difference on road with the right pressure.

To the point that I plan to go back to 43mm soon even with my 95% road riding right now.

The SL8 arrived today to my LBS. They are a little behind, so it won't be ready until Friday. I'm going to ride a bit with the 172.5 crank arms and maybe order 165's after the new year. A friend who's pretty much my same size is building up a Venge with Rival AXS groupset and Force 165 crank arms, so I may get him to let me ride a few miles on it or on the trainer to see the difference.

absolutely yes. not just comfort. speed and handling get better too. i squeezed 45mm on my Aspero and rode it that way for the better part of this year. recently had to put some 40mm back on it and i dont even want to ride the bike. it's not THAT but it is a different ride for sure.
