I've been biking 15 - 20 miles on days I don't run. Today wasn't my fastest (16.1 mph), but it was hard considering I stayed up late, drank a little, and didn't sleep well.

My schedule the next 5 - 6 weeks is:
Monday - rest
Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday - run 4 - 6 miles (at a sub 8:35/mi pace)
Wednesday, Friday - bike 15 miles at 16.0 mph or faster
Sunday - bike 15 mile at an easy, zone 2 pace (this is a recovery ride)

Got in 40 mid day yesterday, 2.5 hours. Got really brutal at the end, as my Garmin was picking up 99F on the pavement. I didn’t eat nearly enough or bring enough fuel with me (didn’t bring any other than Gatorade Zero). Got some pretty gnarly quad cramps that set in. Got me a little worried. Although unlike running, I don’t see it as a huge deal to stop and stretch them out. I would never stop in a race (run), unless it was impossible to move any more. Never really had cramping issues before throughout my years of running. Maybe once or twice on a hot training run.

I’m thinking I need a good bike fitment, as mentioned earlier in the thread. Maybe I’m too quad dominant in the saddle? I was fitted at the Bicycle Shop near LSU when I bought my bike, but could probably use a more in depth fitting.

Anybody familiar with Bayou Bicycles? They have a guy there that looks like he’d be good.

Quad pain could be a saddle that is a hair too low. I got it pointed out on a ride a while back, raised it a little on the fly and it was an immediate relief.

My buddy that I ride with mentioned that it looks too low, so I think I may do that. I was hesitant to make any changes, but I think it’s worth a shot. I’ll just mark where it’s at now in case I want to put it back.

Just finished one of those Sweet Spot rides you mentioned. Fun and challenging. Will definitely be doing these regularly

What shoes and pedals do y'all have? I wear some MTB style shoes with Crank Brothers cleats/pedals and I'm getting the itch to get some SPD-SL style. Even if that means waddling around like a penguin

Does anyone have a link to a good century plan? I'm considering trying to do it.

3 hard bikes (16+ mph) of 15 miles
1 longer bike (16+ mph) of increasing distance (I’ve gone as far as 35 miles)
1 15 mile zone 2 recovery ride

My friend and I are considering doing a 1/5 scaled down version of the Tour de France next month. It will end up being 412 miles in 23 days (with two rest days). The longest ride is 30 miles.

After that I may be able to train for a century ride. I think I could keep a similar schedule but add 10 miles each week and work my way to 100.

assuming this is weekly you should have a decent base to start building on. Adding 10 miles a week certainly wont be overdoing it. one of the most important parts off a 100 mile ride is nutrition. no matter the pace you're going to be burning alot of calories and sweating out alot of sodium, etc. we'll usually do 80-100 on saturdays and i'll consume around 1000 calories between breakfast and on bike nutrition (gels, honey stinger waffles, etc). gotta remember to drink too, especially in the heat. you should mix in something like skratch or nuun in at least one of your bottles. on a 100 miles ride in the summer i'll drink at least 4 bottles worth of water/skratch

Anybody else get really bad headaches after long rides?

I think it's due to lack of sodium intake, but I'm not sure. Anyone have any experience with this?

only time i've ever gotten headaches after a ride is when i didn't manage nutrition properly and got really depleted.

I usually eat a good bit and drink loads of water, but for some reason after hours of being done I'll have a wicked headache.

Happened when I used to run a lot too.

May try to start drinking electrolytic drinks along with water to see if it helps.

you absolutely need to add a sports drink to what you're hydrating with. water will not replace all that salt you are sweating out.

Well good thing I have an unhealthy obsession with Pedialyte, so that shouldn't be a problem

I'm new to cycling and still trying to get comfortable on the bike. What chamois do y'all find to be the most comfortable and provide the most cushion?

i've been wearing Giordana FR-C bibs for a few years and have been happy with them. Our team kits are Borah and I am not a fan of that chamois at all
