Thinking about getting a road bike instead of a Peloton/Echelon

Should I get a used bike from Facebook Marketplace or just get a brand new one. I was looking at Trek just because they have a store by my house. The only one they have in stock right now is about $2k. I can wait for one that is around $1k, but won't ship until mid December.

My goal is to lose some weight and be able to ride with my kids in the hood. Although there is a big biking community around me, so I could easily hook up with people for long rides.

Thoughts?

There are a lot of good used bikes on dfw craigslist. I also know a guy in Dallas that restores old mountain bikes to great condition and sells them for $3-400 each. I would go the used bike route for your first bike. You can always buy a nice new one if you stick with riding. Of course if you don't know much about bikes it may be more difficult to know if you're getting a good bike or a piece of crap. Do you want a mountain or a road bike?

Damn that’s far. It’s a road bike. I just never use it. Would rather a concept bike erg.

I can't stand the feel of a road bike or mountain bike so I just bought me the 24" monza bc bmx bike. I love it, awesome to cruise with the kids.

I want a road bike. I'm not too fond of Craigslist but I'll check it out.

not trying to talk you out of it since I was a competitive roadie for years. I gave up road riding for 100% mountain biking when we moved to Colorado 20+ yrs ago and I'd never get back on the road now - it was dangerous with traffic not paying attention then, now with soccer moms texting while driving there's no way in hell I'd get back out there. All I'm saying is, think about where you have that you can ride and what the road/traffic conditions are like.

That's good advice. He said he lives in Arlington so he is close to a main training route at Joe Pool Lake that has seoeartes bike lanes across the bridge that used to be sketchy to ride by yourself but us now really nice. The rest of the loop is very little traffic and some big hills. He is also close to some good mountain bike trails.

I’ve posted it a few times. It’s about fit and components. Don’t marry a brand at that price point. You go up to $6-8K or more then you can start working brands.

For $1K I’m guessing 105 components maybe. The newest 105s are supposed to be pretty decent. The older versions were not my favorite.

Check out TheProsCloset or Facebook cycling sale pages if you are interested in online and used.

I would not buy a bike just because it is the last one that is in stock. I made the mistake years ago of being talked into buying a bike and was told it wasn't to small, just because the size larger was not in stock. Was a horrible decision. Learn about bike fit and go to a reputable bike shop to get a proper fit. I love supporting local bike shops, but I learned to be more careful.

shite, just walking around the stores I noticed $10k plus bikes.

Here is the Specialized I saw today: LINK

ETA: I think my plan is to get a bike and safety equipment soon while I can still ride outside, then get a trainer sometime after Thanksgiving when it starts to get cold. Bicycle's Inc. said they wouldn't be getting a Trek in that price range until August 2021.

I have a gary fiacher genesis tassajara silver edition mountain bike, but I despise the feel of mountain or road bikes, I hate leaning over, feels like I am on a spin bike. Prefer to cruise and thats why I bought the 24" bmx, I grew up riding bmx and always hated my mountain bikes.

Hope you enjoy it. I love riding around with the kids and they love it too. Be careful riding the roads though.

I agree and I am a roadie now. But last year I cracked my 20 year old aluminum GT road bike. So I found a sweet frame still in the box but a model from 4 years ago. It was 2k for the frame when new but I got it for .....threefiddy and used the wheels, handlebars and pedals I had on the old GT. Bought a new ultegra Groupo and built it up myself. In the end I spent $1500 for a $4k bike so I was pretty happy.

Haha go price check a Specialized Aethos Founders or Pinarello Dogma. Those aren’t the only brands. Your easy in the $12k-$15K bike territory. For just a set of wheels you can drop $1K or more. I’m shopping them now.

It’s not a bad bike and I’m partial to Specialized. Depending on how much you truly ride it the components are really very basic and low end. I’d shop a bit before pulling that trigger.
