Is it normal to be hungry and not want to eat a calorie deficit in the first week? I am averaging a maintenance amount of calories to not be hungry. Macros are right, blood sugar is good, ketostix is purple (I know some think this may be bogus, energy is up but I am having trouble keeping the calories lower because I feel truly hungry. Tomorrow I may try a higher fat (like fat fast) type day and see if that works.

Despite what OWSA says, yes this is totally normal. You are eating less calories than you are burning and your body is using fats. It's true that fats can provide satiety, but in its simplest form this is still a math equation

Yep. For me it's usually 2-3 weeks in on any diet.. my body starts screaming for food. I'll be hungry all day long, even just an hour after eating. I'm hitting that point right now and it sucks. Just be patient and give it time, you'll adjust. Pound water in the meantime, it can help.

Thanks Mingo and Logz. Last time I did keto three years ago I had the keto flu etc so it was a different experience. I had also read just eat until full and do not cheat. Then I was able after a while to lower calories.

This time I felt amazing from the start (energy and mental clarity) but on some days I am just hungry to maintenance level calories. Other days a deficit is sufficient.

Thanks for the input guys. Nice to know others have had this issue also.

Down 5 pounds of water weight also so not complaining.

That is completely normal. Most of the time this is a symptom of sugar substitutes. Are you using any sugar substitutes such as stevia, xylitol, erythritol, etc? Those can increase cravings.

Additionally make sure your macros are correct. Some people go hard out of the gate with a huge deficit and get burned out. Slow and steady.

Keep your fats as close to 75% as possible. For me personally I can eat eggs but they are not filling. Uncured salami or pepperoni on the other hand is very filling to me. Cheese for me is very filling.

Anyone experience keto dreams? I’ve been having some wild arse dreams lately. Pretty vivid too. I had no idea about this until I googled it.

The first few night, yes. I was also extremely hot at night which isn’t out of the norm for me, but this was worse than usual.

However, by day 3, I was rolling. Not hungry, and sleeping like normal.

This is day 5 for me. Nights 2, 3, and 4 were pretty crazy. I was having dreams that SC Kansas was under attack and I was just hanging out on the deck watching it all unfold. 2 nights in a row! The first night was an old reoccurring dream that I was back in high school and I forgot the combo to my locker. I figured it was just a normal dream cycling through. But the warzone dreams back to back made me google it. That has really been the only somewhat bad side effect that I have had to this point.

I drink tons of water and supplemented with sea salted beef broth to try to stave off the flu like symptoms. I have felt great so far. Doing a little cardio. I didn't want to jump in full on marathon training mode right off the bat. I have droppped about 9 lbs of what I can only assume is water weight to this point.

I don't use artificial sweeteners (extremely rare) and my macros are good. I think I need to up the cheese and decrease the green salad even though I was within macros until it evens out.

Day 5 of Keto for me.

Feel great. Have lifted weights 3 days as usual with no ill effects. Have kept away from cardio, though.

Not trying to lose weight. Trying keto as a means to improve my memory.

Not feeling any changes there yet, but I do seem to have a more general sense of 'well-being' if that makes sense.

I'm feeling better. Better mood, more energy, sleeping better... I get your "well being" thing.

Another plus... I'm drinking some whiskey tonight and it takes much less to get me buzzed than it did before.

I’m on day 5 and I’m done with coffee. I feel like I’m on adderrall. (I used to take it regularly) my thoughts are clear and I have energy.

I had 3 TX in the rocks and I am done.

Does any one have any recommended meters etc to see if I’m Ketosis? I do blood glucose monitoring but want to test if I’m in ketosis. I’ve heard urine sticks are unreliable. Do I need to get a doc script to get a blood meter for this?

Have you tried Greek yogurt? I would think plain yogurt would taste terrible but adding sugar to it to improve the taste would not be a good idea, either.

Yes I’ve eaten Greek yogurt before. The plain isn’t bad at all.

Greek yogurt isn’t great for Keto. It has a lot of carbs even the unsweetened ones and the macros are way too protein heavy. You can eat it, but you would need to closely keep it within your macros for the day.

Same here. Keto makes me feel so good I don’t want to ever go back.

I wasn't really aware of the carbs. I just knew it had a high fat content.

Just make sure you get a full fat one. I know here in California it’s hard to find full fat. All the ones in the store are marketed as low fat high protein.

Yeah, I remember looking for it once and seeing nothing in the store but low-fat on nearly every single one.
