Strange shoulder issues

Dealing with a strange shoulder problem. I can do shoulder presses, heavy weight and heavy volume, with no issue.
However, I can barely raise my arm to shoulder level without immense pain. Bench press is almost impossible. If I roll onto my shoulder while sleeping the jolt of pain is enough to wake me up.
Any ideas on what this could be?

My guess is bursitis or arthritis. A steroid shot may help either way. I have severe shoulder arthritis from jiu jitsu, and range of motion shoulder exercises help tremendously. I lay on a bench and do 3 sets of 10 snowangels with 10 lb dumbells as a warmup. I also use exercise bands to stretch. Light weight face pulls also help.

Could have a torn labrum. Very common. Had both mine and had surgery on both and I’m all good now. Surgery was easy. PT wasn’t bad either.

Tendinitis
Definitely ease off whatever you’re doing that’s raising your arms above your shoulders for a few weeks
Ice and ibuprofen and hope it heals up in its own and it’s not a legit tear

Sounds like rotator cuff impingement. You need to go see an Ortho. It won;t get better on its own,

Beware cortisone shots that make you feel better for months, but do not do squat for the actual problem. Happened to me with a labrum tear, but I wasted nearly a year in the gym before I got it repaired.
The dye shot was the worst part, PT wasnt bad.

Skip the ortho. Get evaluated by a physical therapist and get treatment.
Unless insurance doesn’t allow that. Mine does. The ortho will just send you to therapy - skip the middle man and go straight to therapy.

Sounds like adhesive capsulitis

Pretty common shoulder complaint. Our shoulders can get rounded forward from looking at computers and phones. When they get rounded you lose space in the shoulder capsule that can lead to impingements and sometimes tears.
Personally I'd recommend an evaluation by trusted orthopedic or physical therapist so you at least know what specifically you're dealing with. I say this because I battled shoulder issues for a few years that eventually led to a complete tear of my supraspinatus. I probably wasted a few years trying to resolve my issues on YouTube.
With that being said, Squat University on YouTube has pretty informative stuff on shoulder pain and impingement. You can give some of his exercises a try and see if your condition improves. As far as gym goes, if it hurts, don't do it. Cheers

This right here. I had almost the same symptoms as the OP about 4 years ago. Tried RICE, switching/subbing exercises, stretching, et al. - no relief or improvement. Went to an orthopedist and she did an ultrasound of my shoulder. The Doc thought it was bursitis and gave me a cortisone injection right over the bursa sac (she used the ultrasound image to guide the needle). Immediate relief and I haven't had issues since.

He needs to be evaluated by an Ortho to pinpoint the problem. A therapist is not qualified to do that.

Wrong. They are pretty good at it. Especially stuff like impingement and whatnot.

A 10 year can diagnose impingement. No problems till you start to lift your arm above your shoulder level. But what if they miss the real problem?
