Started 1.5ish yrs ago @ 35 yrs old.... learnng curve is STEEP. Lots of aches and pains the first few months but relatively smooth sailing since. Never felt better tbh.

Side note: Isn't it incredible? I'm athletic w/ chimp-like strength and quickly realized how helpless you really are vs experienced grapplers.

I think you mean shallow, but that's what scares me.

Damn, I wish I could do this!

I was a pretty decent powerlifter when I first started BJJ. I say BJJ because when I first got on a mat we did all no-gi at a school that leaned way toward MMA. Dumb arse me did that for over a year until one day a lightbulb went off and I asked how do I get promoted in this art because all I hear on UFC is this guy or that guy is a legit BJJ Black Belt. I want to get what Royce Gracie has and that’s what led me to quit that school and find my current instructor and fall in under Royler Gracie. Back on point, I was always strong as a bull. It got me out of a lot of bad positions as a White and even a baby Blue Belt but when it came time to actually get my Blue Belt, my instructor wanted me to roll with his instructor just to get a lesson in humility being tapped at will by a dude that is 150 soaking wet. That dude is JW Wright. He is based out of St Louis, MO and I actually went there to train prior to getting my promotion and yes, JW absolutely humbled me to the point he would tell me how he would tap me and then proceed to do it.

Anyone else have any experience like this?

Yes, I’ve been training for 7 years and I had major muscle imbalances, tightness, and general pain and I have none of that now. It’s pretty counterintuitive to explain to people who’ve never done it because I’ve been injured around 15 times in my jiu jitsu career but my body is much healthier than it would be if I didn’t do it at all. The combo of forced stretching, yoga-like movements, static and dynamic resistance training, and cardio is the ultimate workout. It sucks that people can go through life without ever trying it to see how well it could work for them.

100% agree. If my shoulders were not wrecked I would have joined a class again. Not only is it good physically but it can help you forget about some problems you are dealing with because if you aren't focused you will get destroyed.

In my third week of getting destroyed on the mats and loving it. Pretty sure people around town think I’m a heroin addict from all the pea size bruises all over my arms Rolled with a brown belt last night who hadn’t been in a couple months so I didn’t see him before last night. I’m pretty sure he had 8 legs. He was 6’5” and I was told before this guy is built similar to you so can learn a lot. He didn’t go hard on me at all, he just wanted to help me the best he could but FFS every time I thought I cleared his legs there was another. Dude was ridiculous but I had a blast.

There's an instructor at the gym I trained at who did the lunch class. I mostly did that class (hope to get back soon once work cools down). Any time there was an odd number, he'd train with a lower belt if they needed a partner. That was usually me. If I didn't know better, I could swear he hand hands for feet. If I was in his De La Riva guard, it just felt like I was helpless to make any movement that he wasn't in absolute control of. Other Purple/Brown/Black belts 100% did whatever they wanted with me as well, but some people have certain talents that I can't ever see how you get there.

My biggest issue right now is the bruising. It honestly is a bit alarming. I’ve never in my life bruised much. I can slam my leg/arm whatever against something and nothing. I look like I have a disease. Looking to get some more vitamin C, K and folate/B9, B12 into my diet which I’ve read helps. But will my body become more resilient. No one else in class looks like me.

You would think powerlifting would make your back worse. Crazy how that works

Powerlifting done correctly is legit. You see a lot of dumb injuries that give powerlifting a bad rep injury wise when form sucks or you just try to go way heavier than you should.

My back used to kill me. Then I started powerlifting and all of that went away.

Squats and deadlifts mixed my lower back…and that plus sled pulls fixed my knee.

If I could just find something to fix my shoulder now I’d be great!

I'm not scared, well maybe a little bit. I biggest concern is that at 65 my body can't take the pounding from the ground work.

Which would be better jiu-jitsu or Krav Maga?
