I think if you tighten up that carb intake along with the cardio, you will lean up some more.

so please explain how not eating carbs while not being in a deficit causes weight loss? A calorie is a calorie with maybe the exception of protein as you spend way more energy digesting it. He might lose water weight, but to lose fat requires one to burn more calorie than they are taking in, period.
Now lowering carbs while keeping the rest of his diet the same would work as its lowering calories. But carb restriction alone is not enough to burn fat is one is in a surplus. Does it make it somewhat harder to gain fat, yes as there are slight thermogenic advantages but very little.
please realize we are talking body recomposition not health. Body recomposition is very simple, calorie suprlus and you gain weight, calorie deficit and you lose.
as far as upping cardio, you could do zero cardio and get shredded to stage ready. Same with eating carbs. Its all about the caloric intake. IF you decide to use cardio to get into that deficit, fine but there is no magic formula.
Not saying that I don't agree that a low carb diet is the best approach to cutting, but without him knowing what his macros are and what his caloric intake is, we dont know if simply cutting carbs will do anything but help him drop water weight.

quote:What are you talking about? He said he's 19% body fat @ 220 lbs. Perhaps 175 would be too light given it sounds like he just has a big frame, but 6'2", 175 only seems too skinny to you because you're used to looking at Americans.
Ok. 6'2" then. At 175lbs he'd still look like he got back from vacation at the Holocaust.

Are you talking about your average person or someone that strength trains regularly. For someone that trains 6'2" 175 is pretty damn thin. I'm 6'3" (above average muscle wise, but not what I would consider big) and I have more than 175lbs of lean body mass.

Yea at that height that would be thin. Somebody that strength trains and is completely natural could carry around 190lbs of lean tissue even down @5% bf. They could easily be walking around at 210-215 at 10-12% BF.

Yea at that height that would be thin.

I'm at about 19% bf right now and if I can get my bf down to about 14 or 15 and keep my weight at 220 I would be satisfied. So definitely eliminate the peanut butter and honey sandwiches then right?
Abs are funny. Some guys show some abs at 20% bf, others still have a small gut at 15%. That aspect is largely genetic, so you'll simply have to get down your bf to the right percentage to lose the belly.
As already stated, track your calories. I've been doing it for a month and lost 8 pounds. I'm not on a crazy diet and I don't do hours of cardio. I simply have a max calorie number and don't go over it by tracking with the MyFitnessPal app. Sometimes you have to guess when going out to eat and such, but you can always overestimate.

at my peak physical fitness, I was exactly 6'2" and 175 lbs and in no way did I look like a concentration camp survivor
I know people hold weight differently, but the one time in my life when I was 220, I was fat as frick
I'm 195 right now and would like to cut about 10 lbs

Maybe so. My brother is 6'1 and 180 and he is skinny.

I'm 5'11" and 225. I am probably 12% if I had to take a WAG. My weight is all in my arse and quads and has been since I started lifting heavy. I have zero issues taking it off. My problem is putting it on so I like to maintain somewhere in the 220 range unless I am training for BJJ matches then I try to stay around 210 so I can cut to 200. I have actually been as heavy as 250 but I was on at that time and ate like a fiend. I gave zero freaks at that time about physical appearance, I just wanted strength and at 250, I was one of the strongest people in Monroe at that time.
Damn those were the days. I miss them.....

Geez, the Holocaust comment was tongue in cheek you goobers. But 6'2" @ 175lbs is still very skinny. He may look cut up with his shirt off, but with shirt on he's going to look like a skinny tall guy. Case in point:
6'2" guy at 155lbs:
Same guy at 175lbs:
Does he look overly large to you at 175 pounds? Yeah he looks cut up, but put a polo shirt on him and he's going to look like a tall skinny guy.
Now this guy is 6'2" and 200 pounds:
See the difference?

Maybe it is. I don't know. I can't read his mind. But since this is a message board where people freely express their opinions, I'm of the opinion that at his height 175 pounds is too skinny. My goal is to be strong, with slabs of muscle, and not too fat. I also like to enjoy life, so I don't get too hung up on looking like a model with razor abs.
Would you rather look like one of the first two pictures I posted earlier, or like this:
I think I'd choose the Jim Wendler look over stick boy up there.

I now see why you want to look like Mr. Skinny McStretch up there. Which is fine. I hope you reach your goals.

quote:You are the one that made the snarky comment about "liking to enjoy life" - implying that being skinny and cut was harder than being large and bulky. I like to enjoy life too. And I am - down here at my tall and thin weight with good definition. It wouldn't be very hard for me to get more cut up like that kid, I just don't care about that. On the other hand, if I had the goal of looking like Wendler, that would essentially require me to overhaul my whole lifestyle. I mean, I don't think I know a single person who looks like Wendler. I know tons who are more in the ballpark of the kid. If you simply eat a regular diet and do moderate exercise, you essentially gravitate automatically towards the kid.
