Counting calories and macros at a 33/33/33 fat, carb protein split. Trying to keep total calories in the 1500 range per day during the week with small weight loss as the goal. I’m 6’2 and 210lbs currently. In good shape with just a little belly fat trying to take off.

Been eating pure protein bars, Costco /Kirkland brand bars and the fit crunch bars as snacks that fit into the guidelines above.

The sugar levels don’t seem too bad, but, would I be better served snacking on something else? I do enjoy the taste of the bars and they fill a sweet tooth.

Trying to figure out if these are hurting anything or if ok within guidelines.

I’ve been eating not as strick in the weekends, so need to clean that up a bit. But, more wondering about the bars as snacks.

What's your logic behind this?

They're not great, like at all.

Yes

I will drink a chocolate flavored protein shake to fill a sweet tooth sometimes. Maybe even just half a scoop and I bet it's less calories than those bars.

You'd really be better off eating just one Hershey kiss or mini Reese's. I know the Reese's are only 40 cals per and a Hershey kiss is probably less.

I went and did blood work to get my T levels checked, it was at 934, to see if there was anything i was lacking or could do better. The results of the lab work were very positive and no issues there. Also did the seca thing and talking to the person at the wellness group he suggested counting calories and macros and suggested the 33/33/33 split. Said my labs looked great and maybe i jsut needed to fine tune my eating. He did not suggest or discourage eating the protein bars, i didn't even ask about it.

In eating a bar after dinner, it is more filling than a single hersey kiss or whatever, so i was liking that.

the sugar levels for the bars listed on the nutrition part are Pure Protein (2g) Fit Crunch (3g) and Kirkland (2g) while also being pretty filling and having decent protein g's in them. But, i have read that the sugar levels in those bars can be labeled to mislead.

More of a hungry after dinner 8pm/9p, range or in the middle of the night 12am that i was filling with a bar occasionally.

What would be better options to ease occasional hungry cravings?

This isn't really promoting muscle growth. I'd just suggest going 20% carbs at most if you just have to have them.

Eat more meat.

Don't do this. Don't eat from dinner time until lunch the next day. You'll feel hungry in the morning for about a week then be fine. The benefits of this have been posted all over this board.

Eating more during your big meals, but if you have to have a snack I keep cheeses, meats (like beef jerkey or Italian type meats), or protein shakes.

What’s weird is I have no problem not eating until 12 or 1pm. My problem comes in at 8/9pm and or 12am. I try not to eat after dinner until lunch the next day, but, sometimes those cravings come in.

It’s like all discipline god out the window after dinner until midnight. May try upping what I eat at lunch and dinner and see if that gets it to subside.

You just have to realize you're really not hungry. When you feel like your hungry drink a glass of water or tea and it'll subside.

I work out around 1030am, weights for 50 minutes then 30-50 minutes of cardio. Play some basketball twice a week usually and fit in a HIIT class once or twice a week.

Is it just me or could you possibly not be eating enough? If you work out consistently and you are 6-2, 210, then you probably have a base metabolic rate of 2,750/day or so. You are getting ravenous hunger pains because that is a huge deficit and your body is craving food (and probably an emphasis on extra gluecose). Try eating more protein, veggies, and fruit. The protein bars you are referring to with 2g sugar sound fine, especially with that large of a deficit. Sometimes results come more quickly from the less extreme. I could be wrong, and would love to hear some insight from some of the more knowledgeable posters on here as well.

The seca results show a 2012 kcal resting energy expenditure. Is that the same as base metabolic rate?

I always tried to do Mon-Fri at a bigger defector to offset more calories on the weekend. That thinking may be flawed.

Yes, to my knowledge. Ok, maybe I’m just way off. It was really a back of the envelope based on my fitness pal (I know, not scientific at all) for myself. I’m 5-11, 175 and I need to eat ~2,500 calories when trying to grow according to the app. If you measured it and that’s a reliable source (I’m sure some guys on here can confirm that) then you are probably on the right track. 1500 just seems so low for 6-2, 210.

Personally, meal replacements are always inferior to whole foods.

That said, most of us need replacements or supplements at some point. If you have time and options, I like greek yogurt and beef jerky as snacks and both would keep you in your goal macros.

Protein bars never really satiate me well. Don't know why.

Overally, on your major question, you could do worse, but probably do better mixing some whole food snacks.

I agree 1500 sounds way low. When I started avatar I was shedding 2-3 lbs a week at 1900-2000 cal starting at just shy of 170 lbs. had to slow that down and adjust by eating more again.

And sure there are better whole food snacks than protein bars but they are convenient and as long as the numbers work in your macros, they are fine in moderation. But I wouldn’t be eating them late at night after I’ve already had a meal either.

1500 seems pretty low for your size and activity level.

I'd like to know how the OP is tracking that number. One protein bar is around 200 calories so unless he's eating chicken breast and broccoli for lunch and dinner that number is pretty hard to believe.

At lunch have Ann ON whey protein shake(110 cal), snack around 3 of hummus or avocado and Mary gone crackers then dinner chicken or fish and veggies, sometimes brown rice or quinoa.
