That is the equivalent of a 16 oz energy drink in a shot. So I guess it's doable. But I put a 120mg shot of NuCaffeine and 90g-100g carbs in my pre-ride/run 750mg fueling bottle and drink it about an hour to 1.5 hours before a morning ride or run and I feel like my head is going to pop off and my gut shortly thereafter completes full evacuation.

By the time I start a run or ride, I am back right again. I sometimes put 40mg of caffeine in each 750ml bottle for a ride (1 hour per bottle), but that's a big maybe. I have started to get away from it because I get a heart-in-the throat feeling (palpitations?) sometimes even though my HR isn't necessarily elevated (happens during runs, too). Cutting back on the caffeine during a ride has seemed to help with that.

I need this though, because on runs, about two miles in, my body says let's go! I'd rather get it all done before.

That’s one of the reasons I started that pre-run/bike regimen with the additional caffeine.

I haven’t lost a shirt yet, but I’ve come damn close.

on race day I drink 2 cups of coffee 2 1/2 hours before the race, run a mile 1 1/2 hours before the race, and meet the portajohn about an hour before the race

I've been getting up eating a bowl of grits and going on my long runs and every time had to take a massive dump 8-10 miles in. Hoping getting up and eating 1.5 hours before the run it will happen before the race but I'm afraid it's all the pounding that forces it out. Nervous though because the aid stations are between 1.7-2.0 miles apart and when it hits it's been hitting hard.

Are you running every day?

2-3 miles at lunch while doing hit training mon-Thur and then throwing 1-2 longer runs into the mix in the evenings mid week. 2 “longer” runs on Fri-Sun schedule depending.
End up with 1-2 days a week off or just a walk.
I have been more focused on getting my time on feet in and long run mileage in versus strict adherence to a specific plan, so far it’s working and my body is holding up good.

i see a lot of advice that says limit fiber intake leading up to a race. I say that's horseshite.

i keep some psyllium husk caps and take a few grams daily. Keeps me consistent and clears me out pre-run

Go all in and get the SiS nootropics gel, 200mg of caffeine.

I was listening to a cycling podcast last night and they were talking about taking gels with caffeine during long races (6 hours). They mentioned that 200mg is the threshold where you start seeing real effects during endurance events and a lower RPE per “research.” But they also mentioned not taking them until the back 1/2 of the race. I may test that in a training ride in the next week.

This is specifically why this gel was created.

Yeah, it takes around 45 minutes for that caffeine to peak so you don't want to crash. You'll be hitting peak energy which should carry you at the end as it slowly tapers down.

Odd that we were discussing it and it came up in one of my normal podcasts. They mentioned the dosing could be as simple as taking a No-Doz (200mg/pill).

They also said proper dosing is 3-5mg per kg of body weight, with 5mg being closer to “research” dosing. Even 3mg/kg would put me a good bit above 200mg. I think I’ll stick to 200mg for now and see what happens. And I’ll pack some TP for the ride.

3 miles, 28 min with stroller. First run since the 27 last Saturday, not recovered and my left knee is not great. Lateral movement is painful and trying to slow down while running downhill is very sharp pain on the outside and back of knee. Have a 5k this weekend with the stroller i should not do but promised so it is what it is.

Anyone running the Fat Boy 5k in Baton Rouge tomorrow (4-12-25)? Weather is looking great for a 5k in April. If you are running, whats you goal for the race?
Based on my training 23:30 is a realistic time. Got lazy after the half last month and did not keep pushing to get into the low 22 or high 21 range.

Running the Gulf Coast Classic 10k in Pass Christian tomorrow. 7:41 last year. 3rd in age group. I haven’t been training much on the run and focusing on the bike for a ride in 2 weeks, and I’m 10 lbs. heavier than I was last year. I’ll be happy with 8:30 or so. We’ll see…

I think i might try combining a 5 hour energy with a gel to get both the caffeine and the sodium and calories. Those SiS gels are impossible to find here. No local stores carry them, and i really want to see my tolerance to 200mg of caffeine.

It looks like the Feed has them: LINK

I’m waiting on some SIS 40g carbs gels (no caffeine) to arrive from there today. I think I’ll do the same with a 5 hour energy on the back 1/2 of my next long ride and see what happens.

They're all sold out, I've been on the notify me list for a few weeks now. So I'm gonna experiment with 5 hour energy. Gonna bring some baby wipes with me just in case.
