That did not go well at all. Goal pace was 6:30-7:05. Legs got tired fast and felt sluggish the whole run.
Let me tell you a secret - sometimes workouts just don't go as planned, we aren't all Randy and crush our intervals with extra room and energy and then still underpredict what we are capable of
I did some 1k repeats 2 weeks ago @5k race pace and crashed and burned, it was absolutely terrible. I thought there was no way I would be able to sub-20 on Saturday... sometimes a "bad" workout session isn't actually all that bad, it teaches you to push through adversity.
(there was someone else awhile back on this thread as well talking about how they missed almost all of their goals and paces throughout the entirety of their training for a marathon, yet went out and surpassed their goals for the marathon, it happens)

1k repeats at threshold/5k paces are brutal. Especially if you go on short rest.

You and me both. I felt great after 20 yesterday, my last mile was easily my fastest at like 7:45. But, I've heard plenty of horror stories from first time marathon runners who absolutely tanked in the last 4-5 miles so we'll see.
It is wild to think that even after 20 miles you still have a 10k to go.

First time marathon was in January. I had a buddy who has several and a Ironman somewhat coaching me and he drilled it in my head to not push hard early.
I started out the gate with a 10:20 and pretty much finished the last mile at the same pace and after when I told him I felt I left some in tank and he just laughed and said “no that’s why you didn’t blow your engine was u started (slow)”
2miles @ 11:01 HR 132

I’ll never forget the last 10k of my first marathon. A truly humbling experience.

I remember the last 10k on my first Marathon
I also remember my 3rd marathon's last 10k where I had a 25 year old drop dead in front of me and I got to do chest compressions... fun times

And me, on the other end of the spectrum, climbing into the mid 160s on easy runs

Thats become a legit fear of mine so thanks for that ha

It's amazing how different people are with stuff like this. My sweet spot HR is between 130-145ish. I feel like I can run forever. I bump up to 150 and beyond and I seriously feel like WTF am I doing this for.

Do the ultrasound heart testing, I'm scheduled for one in a week. It's obviously not 100% but it'll give you some peace of mind.

Yep, it's one of my gripes with things like the Maffetone method. My max HR is north of 205 and I'm 30. If it works for you it's fine but there are outliers that shatter rules like that. Once you figure out your sweet spot it makes training so much more enjoyable

I “tabata” once a week and hit max HR between 190-193.
I can cruise forever around 162 HR.
I don’t know how some keep it below 145 on jogs of a very average pace. Boggles my mind.

I don't know, I just know my dumb arse took forever to find the sweet spot and that's it. It was like an epiphany when I realized it.

My sweet spot is anywhere from 140 to 170 (during Winter time it's 140-150 but once it heats up I can get up to the 180s and be fine as long as I can stay hydrated it's weird like that)
So on a side note - I did 10 miles with 1050ft of elevation gain yesterday and averaged 8:09 minutes a mile, I'm slightly in pain today
now time to go do my workout
Update: Workout sucked - 6 miles (10 miles total) of Pace (sub-7:30) after 1050ft of elevation gain hurt a lot, but I got all of the pace miles in. Now I need to figure out if I want to do 10 more miles tomorrow or give myself a day of rest after basically 2 workouts in a row... I'm leaning toward rest, but this is peak week and all rules are out the door on peak week.

Yall inspired me to do some 1k repeats. Confirming they suck, and I only did 5.

I figured your workout this morning had something to do with this thread

I’ve been doing the Garmin training plan for a sub 43 10k. Not the one where you choose a coach, but the one where it predetermines workouts based on other health parameters. It’s been okay so far, but the workouts are stupid. Today it wanted me to do 2 x (3x15 sec) @ 4:45/mile, I opted for my own 5 x 1k as I think that’s better geared toward my goal 10k.

Man, I didn’t like the Garmin Coach workouts either when I tried them years back…it was way less (volume and intensity) than I felt I should be doing. Quickly said F that

When I crash and burn in Illinois... Yes when, not if, I have no faith in myself, I'll be purchasing the v.02 coaching yearly subscription
