I've heard great things about Peavine and have had a few buddies run it. Lord willing I'm out on the lake every 4th though

Peavine is fun, but Statue to Statue is my race. Love that one.

Aubie;

bruh when are you going to sign up for a race and actually race it??? every week you sign up for something run it and then loosely complain about getting beat by some "freaks". then say you only ran it at 140 HR or paced with a kid. DROP THE HAMMER FOR ONCE

I did at a 5K back at the end of summer. Came out hot and felt awful at the end of the race, although I did PR and win my age group.

I feel WAY better progressing into my race pace. After a 7:50 mile one in my last race (8K), I settled into my pace and did 7:30, 7:25, 7:25, and 7:50. Felt great. Probably left 30 secs or so out there, but certainly not the 6:30/mile that won or even the 7:00/mile that got second.

drops hammer sets PR and wins age group. goes out for a wednesday tempo run with warm up and cool down doesn't win but felt good after. Its a race you aren't supposed to feel good at the end. walter white's crescent city classic might be a little extreme but F it. Only got so many chances to go all out don't watch as others run by.

My Garmin and VDOT paces are aligning to tell me i can run in the low 1:30s for my half in January. I've failed to hit pace in a few workouts but I'll be damned if I'm not going to go out there and hit goal pace for at least a few miles; I paid for a race! Will I burn up and have to walk through some water stations? We'll see

ETA: in high school one time, my coach made me go out in under 60 seconds for the first lap of an 800m so I'd know what it felt like to go out too fast. Sometimes you have to burn all your matches to figure things out.

I need to be doing some target pace intervals and I haven’t been doing them lately. Will correct that this week.

ETA: 3 miles at 140 HR.
3.5 miles at 170 HR.
Beer and burgers after.

Arkansas baws: any of you ran the Arkansas Traveler 100? If so, how was it? I'm looking at it for my 2025 WSER qualifier.

Know a couple of guys that ran it in 2022. One was 49 and went 26hr other 60 and ran 27.5hr. nothing outstanding to report. lot of fire service roads so shouldn't be anything real technical. if looking for other options and don't want 100 miler check out grindstone 100k. almost same amount of vertical gain but still easily doable with 17hr cutoff.

if anyone wants a challenge registration opens sunday morning 7am central time for Crazy mountain 100 w/ 21k gain. It will sell out fast. I'm very hesitant to resigter with the way my foot doesn't respond so makes trails very difficult espically the downhill. My SO will be attempting to register so I'll be out there one way or another. its a beautiful area!!!! Race info from website

This cannot be your first ultra. Period. You must submit a qualifying ultra by registration. If you register and do not do so, unfortunately we will have to cancel your entry (no refunds) It must be a trail ultra at least 50 miles (50 miler must be under 16 hours) or more (anything over 50 miles, just needs to be completed within the allotted time for the race with an official finish), with a minimum of 6,500 ft of vertical gain completed within 2 years of the race start date. It can’t be a road race. Fat arse style, short loop courses do not count. DNF’s of 50 miles do not count.

Do NOT underestimate this terrain. It is steep, it has terrible footing at times, you will be exposed to the elements and you reach 10,000+ feet of elevation in extreme backcountry. Downhill often doesn’t mean runnable due to the technical nature of the terrain. This is an extremely difficult, graduate level 100. A 50 mile race may not be sufficient in itself as a good prerequisite to be able to complete this race, and it’s absolutely by no means a good option for your first 100 miler. We have gone back and forth between making the qualifier be a 100 mile race, so please take this seriously. The race is in July for good reason. It’s the best chance of fair weather, but is by no means a guarantee. The Crazies are in fact, crazy… and the weather doesn’t care what day you’re running. It can be 90 degrees and turn to hailing sideways, and then snowing and hour later. You must be prepared for anything. 2023 showed a raging hail/lightning/rainstorm within the first hour of the race, and then greeted our aid stations with golfball sized hail. It later warmed up to a warm 80 degrees at the finish. This is true, rugged, mountain, backcountry.

basically i want to run this race however with whatever foot nerve issue I have going on that no one can figure out makes running trails very difficult. the lack of sensation i have in my foot makes placement on the ground very off at least in perception. what i think my foot/leg is doing or should be doing isn't the same as the feedback that i get which results in zero confidence to navigate rocky trails. it really f'ing strange to stay the least. but guess at what might be going on is called runner's dystonia. I have a referral to the Mayo clinic for evaluation but they want to schedule to be there for a week which isn't easiest thing to do time and expense wise.

Grindstone looks interesting. I'm going to look at it a bit closer.

After getting Pinhoti done this year and doing another 100 in the spring, I don't think I want my wser ticket to need to pass a challenge like crazy.

Thanks for the info on Arky traveler!

Bo have you thought about changing it up and doing Chief Ladiga or Blue Heron Hundreds?

Both are very run-able and fast for a change of pace

I had a neuroma in my left foot. Heard it was common transitioning to minimalist shoes. Toes spacers resolved the problem. I’ve been obsessed a bit with foot health and stability since I started the minimalist thing.

Yeah I'm sure I'll do Chief Ladiga at some point. It's a spring race though and I'm trying to help a friend get his spring race - Bootlegger 100 - turned into a wser qualifier in 2025.

I did intervals in my Altras yesterday and about died - I can't believe I thought about going completely minimalist back in the day, I can barely stomach running in Altras these days

I'm going to try out some Adidas Pros next

I imagine the neuroma sucks. i have no pain. it more sensory / activation issue. i'm telling my leg/foot to do this, it might do it but the feedback says otherwise. also feels like i'm wearing the right shot on my left foot. again its very odd and difficult to explain.

Blue heron is one of the least appealing races i've ever looked at. 5 10-mile out and backs which i guess isn't much different than tunnel hill or similar. designed for "fast" times.

A neuroma is slightly painful or can be, but the main issue is it feels like you have a pebble in your shoe and it won't go away. Toe spacers and a lot of foot strengthening/mobility work eventually made it go away.

Take a look at the SoleMate and Naboso. I love my SoleMate and find the strength and stability exercises to be very challenging and great for overall foot health.

Again, I've found foot training to be a little obsessive since going to the minimalist footwear.

adidas adi pro 3 probably one of my all time favorite shoes, had 2 or 3 pairs. haven't tried 4 as its still hard to get ordered and i'm not interested in the $250 price tag. If you can find the 3's under $150 its an excellent buy. the EVO SL is getting good reviews if you can find it.

Jordan didn't like the New Balance Supercomp trainer V2 and neither did I at first. its grown on me for everyday use. i'm on my 2nd pair now. got 400 miles out of the first and still can use on the treadmill. Got the latest pair for Relay goods for $110 shipped.
