Where are yall getting the mileage build plans? I really need a target race......

I've been using SWAP (Some Work All Play) training plans for the last couple of years and really enjoy them. I've been fully ready for every race I've used them for.

For the most part I write my own plan - but my "baseline" was originally a modified pfitz plan that you can get from Runner's World (pfitz was an editor for Runner's World, they used his concepts the most). I then read the Jack Daniels running formula and have been slowly adapting my plans closer to his methodology since coming back in July (more "pace" miles and a 4 day running block with my long run in the middle)

There are a bunch of places to get a plan for fairly cheap, a friend of mine is currently using "Runna" and I know Vdot o2 has plans you can pay for as well but are a little more expensive. (VDot is Jack Daniels website, he in my experience uses the most "trusted" running plan, it's probably what Pedro uses with his kids at school, and most "local" running coaches around here *cadence running and resolute use them* are vdot certified)

Mine is a slightly modified Pfitz base build. Basically just keeping the usual guidelines for base: 10% increases, cutback week if I'm feeling fatigued, 1 tempo day and 1 longer day with the rest being easy. I start a HM block in about 6 weeks.

I use Daniels with some double thresholds depending on training phase. Vo2max or speed workout for the other quality day. Usually hill sprints with long recoveries. Usually keep the long runs at easy pace. Doubles 5-6 days per week.

Increase mileage 10% or less each week, take easy weeks as needed. I try to stay in the 70-80 miles per week range but that can be difficult. No room for error.

New runner here. Been doing mostly everything on treadmills. My Aunt wants to run a half in Iceland next year for her 60th (experienced runner). I would like to do it with her. I’m up to 3ish miles continuous running for the last 4 weeks but I keep getting tired and heart rate rising every time around 3-3.5 miles. What can I do to get past this? 33 years old. Never been a long distance runner so don’t know a whole lot about it. Everything I read just says keep running but seems like 4 weeks I should build up more than getting tired at the same point basically every run. Doing this 4-5 times a week for the past 4 weeks. 5’10 175. Any advice?

Slow down on 2 or 3 of those runs.

If:

You are probably running past your lactic threshold. You can only stay above your lactic threshold for so long before you body starts "falling apart".

Slowing down will feel weird at first - but everyone who has gone through what you are going through right now and made it out the other side - slowed down

P.S: Welcome to the insanity club

As mentioned, run slow. Like 9:30+ minutes/per mile. Start with 3 and 4 mile runs, gradually build one run per week into your “long run”.

And maybe even slower than that. For a gauge, you ought to be able to have a conversation without much effort. It'll feel weird at first to go that slow, but it will payoff down the road.

Get a longer run in at least once a week. Even if it's not constant. Do 6-7 miles on a Saturday to start with. Run until you feel like you need to stop, then walk a minute and start running again. Repeat until you finish the miles. Do this until you no longer need walk breaks and then increase mileage for the long run.

9 miles this morning at 9:25 pace. Mostly an easy run with 6 X 20 sec @ 6:00 pace with 2:00 recovery in the middle.

If you do, don't wear a watch or look at a timer or anything. I'm about 10 weeks in and still trying to learn how to "run slow" but if I know how fast I'm going I can't help but speed up because I always need to prove that I can. I get worried that running slow will make me slow. I still don't like it but it's what everyone says so I'm sticking with it. We'll see if it pays off.

Go get the 80/20 book and follow it. Running slow works.

With that said, I did my usual Tuesday routine. 3 @ HR 130. Then VO2 for three miles: 9:00, 7:45, 7:30. First mile was up hill.

I don't put too much stock into my Garmin's race predictions but it's ticking towards a sub 20 5k and a sub 1:40 half. That's a little too spooky for me when I'm still just doing base building

5.5 miles last night at 130HR. Just more base effort. Not sure what I'm doing tonight. Wife has us going to some deal where you can bring your dog. Guess I might run with my little dog which means we aren't going too far or too fast.

I did 8 at mostly easy effort, kicked it up a notch at the end and went 6:45 up a hill for the last half mile.

Kinda getting excited, I need to buy my second par of shoes for the 100 miler and I'll be refreshing the Grandma's Marathon constantly to get a spot for next year (on October 1st!).

I'm not sure what my effort is going to be at Grandma's, I'm not even sure if it's going to be my "next" Marathon. But I'm really excited, because looking at that course makes me super excited, it just seems so awesome.

Looks flat. You doing the Black Creek full/half in Feb? Probably be my target race. Got some 5K/10K stuff on the books between now and then.

Yeah, I think it's pretty flat, would have to ask Pedro for confirmation (he ran it last year), but it's actually when the race is that's the thing I'm most excited about. Training in May / June in Alabama and then going to MN for a race will mean I'll be used to super hot and it won't be super hot, should be amazing.

No, I did the half last year but have no desire to do it this year. I run that trail all the time, it's kinda hard to "pay" to run it when I get to run it for free so much.

Other than the rain, how was it? It would seem that an out and back race on that course could get a little tight.

I’ve been running for a while, and this still happens to me sometimes because I don’t do what the experienced runners here say: slow down on some training runs. I’m just hard wired to go, I think.

It’s especially a problem when I mix in weights 2x per week, HIIT 3x per week, and bike 1x per week. My legs get pretty beat up and I don’t give them much of a break. Outside of race season and leading into it, my runs should be at a 9:00-10:00 pace and be used as building volume rather than setting PR’s.

Now if I could just make myself do that.

Recent runs for the log portion of this thread (time constraints abound):

9/12
4 @ 9:15

9/14
3 @ 8:55 (preceded by 33 mile bike-but not really a brick due to social hour after ride)

9/15
4 @ 8:40

I’ll hopefully add some slow volume this week while I’m out of town.
