re: Official Running Log/Marathon Training Thread

Finished up my week with a 9-mile progression run this morning. Did the last couple of miles at around 8:00 and 7:30. My average easy pace while staying in HRZ 2 continues continues drop despite the increase in mileage, intensity, and heat/humidity, so I know my training has been on point for the past month. I start my transition into phase 2 next week.

Not marathon training but this seems like the place to discuss my progress.
I am training for a backcountry Colorado elk hunt. 10,000'+ elevation, 5-7 mile backpack into the country. Damn near impossible to train for due to the drastic difference in oxygen levels from there to Mandeville
I am 6'- 6'1" and hit sub 200 for the first time in many years this morning. I had previously been settling around 205 for my goal weight but this season I am trying to get down to 190.
For the last few weeks (during teleworking) I had been running 2.5 - 4 miles most days at 11:00 then hitting the gym at 3:30 after work. I was back at work this week so I had to switch it up and do the gym at 11:00 and I didn't really get to run during the week. I also mix in some sprint, job, walk, interval runs every so often which I think has helped a ton.
Yesterday and today have been my best runs in a long time! Feeling great. I really think taking the 4 days off of running helped me recover and drop my time significantly.

Heat is supposed to be an okay proxy for altitude, so you picked a good time of year to start
In my limited experience exercising at that altitude, it does seem to be a similar type of suck as long as you can tolerate it otherwise (i.e., you don’t get altitude sickness)

This is going to be year #3 for me making a similar hunt (all in CO)
In the past I haven't been running mid day outside in the summer. I am hoping the heat+humidity will be somewhat comparable
I have never had muscle fatigue while out there, just shortness of breath
Last 2 years I was doing a lot of Orangetheory and I really liked the results but I still struggled traversing the mountains.

My Garmin told me I wasn’t maximizing my long runs so I did today’s as a progressive push and increased my total distance to 15. I got my aerobic training effect up, so I guess it worked.

Any of y’all try to run on pavement vs concrete?
There’s a couple runners around here that stay on the street even though there’s quality sidewalks 5 feet to their left.
I know it may be a tad softer than the concrete just doesn’t seem worth it.

There aren’t sidewalks where I run currently, but there were years ago on my routes in Baton Rouge. I always took the street over the sidewalk. The sidewalk tore me up, and it was generally torn up itself from roots and never maintained.

I do run the trace. I either run it to Old Rail then towards the lake and around or out to Lonesome and back

When I started running it was in Richmond and I was told to avoiding using the sidewalks. Generally the sidewalks were uneven and full of tripping hazards. Even though I'm not there anymore I still stick to the streets out of habit.

I run on the pavement just because the sidewalks are uneven or broken. I once tripped on broken sidewalk in the dark and broke my brand new phone.

Sounds like several people.
The sidewalks/ biking trails are great here so we don’t have that issue. I just don’t trust the drivers out there.

I prefer the pavement, unless it's late in the day and the sun has it roasting. Only then will I take the sidewalks.

Cool! I either run from Koop to around Fontainebleau or from Hoffman out to Abita. I love the neighborhoods out by Lonesome. I’m always tempted to leave the Trace to go run the neighborhoods instead, but I haven’t given in yet.

Have a couple of fun things next week.
1 mile for a fit test, hoping to be under 5:40
5K with a workout group. Will have to pace myself but will be happy under 20 min.

Looks like our big 4th of July 5k is a go. I haven't run it in several years.
If you finish in the top 100, you get a mug, and they are pretty coveted among the runner community in this area. I have 1 mug. You pretty much have to go sub 19:30 to get a mug.
Maybe with all of this going on, it will be less crowded and sub 22 could get a mug? Maybe? I guess we will see.

Me either. I always run into traffic so I can jump out of the way if a driver veers my direction. Getting hit from behind is much more common.

the running on the street vs the sidewalk is a constant battle on my neighborhood FB page
I mostly run on the road simply because I'm pushing a jogging stroller on 99% of my runs and the sidewalks in my neighborhood are terrible
