Haven't posted in over a week and the next thing I see is a bunch of shirtless dudes. WTF?
Just kidding. I'm just envious of the bods because I rock the dad bod.
Have a race next weekend so my workouts have been swim/bike run.
Mon - Swim
Tuesday - 9 miles 2 tempo 4 easy 3 tempo
today - 40 mile bike 4 mile run
tomorrow - hit the garage.

First run back (noticing my run for a week, off for 3 months routine?), no pain after the warmup. 400m warm, hurdle drills, active stretching drills, 2 miles jogging the curves, striding the straights. 15:52 for the 2 miles. 400m down, static stretching.

Question -->
Is there an upside / downside to running a local race in place of a training run ?
I have a 12 mile training run scheduled on 4/12 and found a local half marathon less than 20 mins away on the same day.
They have a pace group so that would help me learn to be more consistent.
Downsides include the cost and too many events per year.

That's blasphemy.
I say go for it. I'm all for doing any race I can. Can't beat the experience IMO.

I use races to replace workouts all the time. Key words are in place of, not in addition to. Plus it’s fun to get to see your progress in a race environment.

Jeez Burt what time you get up in the mornings?

4ish.
Okay baws, race strategy. 20 mph with gusts of 30 this Saturday. I’m not going to PR. My strategy is to draft the second pack as I’m not fast enough to top 5 it. I’m currently in 2nd place in the series and if I top ten, I have a better than 50 percent chance of a podium for the series. Top 7 moves it up to about 90 percent.
Racing for place and not time. The weather is really pissing me off because if I could have gone sub 1:23, I qualify for the NYM 2020 and don’t have to run that fricking marathon in Cotter in November.

There's a marathon in Cotter? Where the hell do they run it? I've fished the White and if I'm remembering correctly there's not much out that way

North of 412 down Denton Ferry rd. It’s an out and back. Flat and USTF certified. Pretty but not very exciting.

Not sure this is the best place to go 1:23. That last 5K was pretty brutal from what I remember.

No doubt in my mind I can do it if the wind isn’t a factor. My training says I’m capable of 120 121. There’s a lot of elevation and I run that section pretty often on long runs but the elevation is quick and steep which is preferable over rolling. There are guys that went sub 123 last year that I have beat this year but like I said. Regardless of weather or time this race is about position so I can podium for the 18-19 RBRS.

Damn, the lodge we stay at is off of Denton ferry. We used to go in November too. Crazy I never knew about it. And yeah I can't see that course being very exciting

Alright! Looks like I’ll see you there then.

Maybe you didn't see my post about doing a 2 mile workout in 15:52 yesterday. No marathons, halfs, 10ks, or even 5ks any time soon

Starting a special project at work that’s gonna change my work schedule quite a bit. Gonna have to get on that 5 am run schedule as well. I can’t keep doing these evening runs my legs feel dead.

Man, I agree with you. Morning runs are so much better especially during our yearly 8 month sauna.
I’m up for a position at a company that will give me more free time in the morning. You can bet on 2 things if this happens: my runs will shift to the mornings and I’ll get a pair of 4%s.
Reason for the latter is this will be my first job that puts my compensation package north of 6 figures so I won’t feel as bad for spending 250 on some shoes. Maybe I can get them negotiated in my hiring package.

if you ever see me NOT morning running it's probably only because i'm a kid's practice or traveling. occasionally if the family is in the middle of something else or out of town and i'm alone or i have a bit time on the weekend i'll do something but those are few and far between.
i really don't like being outside above 75 degrees for any activity whatsoever. i hate swimming and water sports to be honest.
