Broke my keto diet in a big way yesterday and today. Not even good foods....like donuts, pizza, and wings. Did chest and tris in the gym then ran 3 miles in the heat. Lower average HR, nearly 1:30 faster pace, and just felt better (still winded and out of shape, but better). I love carbs. Even felt better lifting.

Getting back on the wagon tomorrow, but strongly considering giving up on Keto. Didn't see anything worth while after the first week which is all water weight apparently. Going to choose good carbs and put them in the diet before activity. But I think I'm done with the strict <20g a day stuff.

I’ll be back on the pavement tomorrow am. Haven’t ran since 13.1 last Monday. Kind of a planned week off, with me starting the Higdon 12 week plan tomorrow. Also have been remodeling our kitchen so it’s been eating up all of my free time.

My damn lower leg was red and swollen after the long run last Monday and is still sensitive and sore. I was thinking it may be an achilles strain or something but I noticed a knot on my shin earlier today that is sore and seems to be the issue. Maybe just a shin splint or something? I have no clue, but gonna test it out tomm. Hopefully nothing that lingers.

Currently training for:

Soldier Marathon (November 2018)
Mt Cheaha 50k trail race (February 2019)
Lake Martin 50 mile trail race (March 2019)

Will run various 5k/10k/half marathons in between.

I'm interested in this.

If I'm running my first full marathon in December, is it possible to get ready for a 50k by February? From what I've read, ultras aren't necessarily as focused on pace and time as they are with completion. It might take me 6-7 hours to finish a 50k, but I've had so much fun on my trail runs that I think it'd be a blast to climb Cheaha as part of a race.

2 months to recover and add less than 6 miles. Fairly certain its doable. Just have realistic goals.

Yes absolutely doable. Like you said, its not about pace on an ultra... it's about time on your feet. I did Cheaha in 2017 and it took me over 7 hours. You can even start basing your training on time on your feet instead of distance (for your long runs).

Is 7 hours a good time? Not meaning to be offensive or anything. I'm just curious what I should expect as a beginner. Shooting for a 10:00/mile pace for my first marathon.

How much walking is done during these? Do you have to pack all of your resources or are there ample rest and hydration stations?

Not particularly. That was my 1st 50k, and I was told that it was a very difficult race as far as ultras go. I think I was middle of the pack among finishers. I learned some hard lessons that day about going out too fast as I kept a 10-12 min/mile pace for the first 12 miles. I ended up walking most of the last 10.

Perspective: on roads, I'm a 7 min/mile 5k and 8 min/mile half marathon pace. Shooting for anything under 9 min/mile pace for Soldier Marathon in Nov

Unless you are an elite endurance racer... alot. Goal for me is to try run must of the 1st 10 miles (except for steep hills) and then run only flats and downhill the rest of it.

Not sure about Lake Martin, but at Cheaha they had aid stations every 3-5 miles with plenty of snacks and refills for hydration packs. There are probably some that run without hydration packs, but not many.

That’s a lot of mileage

I'm behind schedule from an injury in early July. This should have been close to a 50 mile week.

Trying to play catchup, but stay injury free. Gotta be smarter if I can't be faster.

Got in my first day of Higdon Half Training. Three miles (easy), pace was around 9:00. Followed by 20 mins Yoga/stretching and got in about an hour at the gym after. Did some full body circuits with a focus on keeping HR elevated/fast paced.

Loving the Ultra talk. I’ve become a fan of the Ultra scene here lately between Instagram, YouTube, this thread, etc. I’m still light years from attempting that, but would love to someday. I was also wondering about pace/etc., which was covered earlier. The more info the better for me at this point.

It's great... several scenic spots at high points and then running beside/through creeks at low points.

I would love to finish a Ultra Trail Run. Watching the show Boundless on Amazon has gotten me super amped to try one.

My goal has always been to finish a 100 miler.

Will probably have to wait till my kids are older in order to find the time to train for one though.

Same here, although I’ve done zero trail running in my life and not really sure of many areas to train around BR. I know of the area in St. Francisville and I’m guessing around Tunica Hills, though not exactly local to me. I’ll definitely look more into it in the fall/winter/spring months.
