I usually take a chocolate gu on long runs. I think they give me a little boost. Lately I’ve just been munching on cliff bars though.

Maurten are my go to, especially for races, but as hog said they’re pretty pricey. I like them because I can pop one at any time and don’t need a cup of water to wash it down. Only downside is they don’t have caffeine. Use Clif and Gu also for long training runs. Picked up a few different flavors of Gu from Academy and really liking the salted watermelon + caffeine. I can’t really do any chocolate flavors on the run as they jack my mouth all up.
Never done any of the chews but I’ll probably pick some up next time I’m in Academy.

Easy. Based on your mileage and the race times you’ve put up running at that mileage, your easily the most talented runner in the group.
I think you should set your sights a little higher.
To the gel question. All my long runs are dry. Pre race, I’ll hit the chews 5-15 before and if it’s over 10k, I’ll use gu roctane around the 38 minute mark.
It took practice to do it without water but it definitely doable.

Ran 3 miles this morning. Legs felt like concrete in 33 degrees.
As far as gels, I’m one of those that can eat any of them and feel fine but I do have preferences if I’m buying them.
For Ironman or marathon it’s roctane.
Roctane - pineapple or vanilla orange
Training or small events
Gu - salted caramel or Carmel macchiato
Hammer - Montana huckleberry
Cliff shot - mocha
Honey stinger - gold

Now I’m the one blushing
Appreciate, hopefully it goes well. It’s crazy that before this past October my half PR was 1:38 and it could improve so much

$20 for a box of 24? If so, that's a good deal. I mostly use Clif gels, but I find myself using fewer of them in recent weeks. I was taking one (w/ caffeine) before my long run, and one (w/o caffeine) in the middle of my long run. Unless I'm running super early, I can usually get all the calories I need for the first part of my run from eating whole foods such as bagels, pita bread, grits, or muffin.

PHEWWWWW Good morning fellas. Holy shitballs it's cold outside!
Looking forward to my 3 miler I have to hit today. I'll surely be bundling up. I'm thinking Joggers, Hoodies, and headband that covers the ears.
How do you guys like to dress in temps like these?

Yeah I’ll usually have one half way through my long run just as a precaution to get me through. Would rather take it before I feel like I need it. Could I go without? Probably. Same with a race (13.1), I’ll have one around 6.
Box of 12 Maurten is $45, actually looked at them yesterday but gonna use the few Clif/Gu I already have on hand before I order more.

If I could pick only one additional item to wear in cold weather, it would e gloves for sure. I've also been using arm warmers more often than in previous years. I like them because they are easy to peel off and store if your run progresses into the warmer parts of the day. I also cut the sleeves off of some older shirts and wear around my neck sometimes. I feel safe saying that I hate the cold more than most here, and I'm counting down the days to warmer weather.

Damn. Maurten is expensive as hell. I didn't bring anything with me on my 10 mile trail race last weekend and I regretted that around mile 7. I could have used a little energy boost, even if it meant just a mental boost.
What do those taste like? I always prefer the more sour GUs and Clif flavors.

Last time I ran in coldish weather - mid 40's, I regretted not having some gloves. Considering that it feels like 28 outside, I'm going to look into some for sure!

Same. Gloves are really the only thing I wear in colder weather.
If it's really cold I'll wear a jacket, but it has to be below freezing for that.

i overdressed this morning. had to ditch an outer layer and beanie midway though. i never learn my lesson.

Tights, long sleeve, gloves, and ear warmers or beanie. I really can’t stand having a lot of stuff on me when I run, it bothers me.
My strava profile pick, that race was a 13 degree wind chill and I got the short shorts on lol.

I don't like being cold when I run
So usually pants (sometimes tights underneath)
long sleeve shirt (have a couple hyperwarm w/ fleece inside) and a hoodie
beanie
gloves
as for Gu's
I rather whole foods so if my training run is under 16 miles or so I go with just water (maybe coconut water as back up)
If I am giving race effort on a half I will have 1 Gu (usually split it into eating 2 halves)
For my full I did 3 Gu's (split into 6 halves)
I find eating half is easier on my stomach than slamming 25g of sugar at one time

thanks for all the replies all. i'm not looking to get poor on maurtens. my main sell to my wife is that i spend less than $300 a year on running shoes and races or anything else. that would end that with the quickness.
i've had GU regular and rocktane. The rocktanes are the ones that make me feel like i am invincible, but it's pretty hard to come off of that one for me. last time i had one i was up till 1 AM (took it at 7 PM on a 10 mile run) which was not intended.
the clifs i got were .75 a piece, so i got 10 of those and then a few different chews. i just have never tried them consistently enough to know if there's a big difference.

I go to The Feed dot com and subscribe for my nutrition. Also, my daughters like those kids Zbars, and me too, so you can get a pretty decent discount. They will also send you different samples and a water bottle.
I set my subscription to like 6 months but always change it up per needs.
The Feed subscription has them for $3.31. $39.72 for 12.
Roctane $1.91
Gu regular $1.19
Clif shots $1.06
Honey Stinger $1.27
Usually ships in 2 days.
