Mental block on pre-set number of reps

It seems like if I decide on a pre-set number of reps that's the exact number I'll be able to do. It's like I hit a mental barrier and this is really hurting my AMRAP sets.
For example I do sets of 20 push ups throughout the day and I often struggle on #20. On one of these sets each day I try to do one more than I did the day before. Right now I'm on #38 so today I did several sets of 20 throughout the day but on one set I did 38. So why do I struggle with 20 on one set but then do 38 later that day? Tomorrow I will do 39 on that set and so on.
This creates problems on my amrap sets bc I feel like I can do more than I'm doing. How do I get past this mental barricade?

It’s a pretty natural mental block.
Just focus on blasting away until you can’t and forget about the numbers. Tough to do, but you’ll figure out how to block it out with practice.

It helps me to focus on rep speed. Trying to be fast every time makes me go harder and not conserve energy.
When you mentally treat a submaximal set like a submaximal set, it can get maximal pretty fast. When you treat every rep like a max, you blast through more.
At least that's how it works for me. Form, quality and speed are what I lock in on for submaximal work.

Start counting your rep set after you’ve started and AFTER it has started to hurt.

I have the same problem. I can hit 10 reps easy, but for some reason, my mind just shuts down once I hit double digits. It’s very unnerving. I got away from AMRAPs for a while to incoporate pause work and to work on technique. In a couple of months I’ll be good to do AMRAP sets again.

Incorporate some drop sets to get some extra work in.

I had never really thought of how I broke through the mindset, but now that you’ve typed it I do the exact same thing
When you just blast through the reps it definitely gets you to do more.
Another thing I started to do is gripping the bar as hard as I physically can. For some reason that gets more output for me.
