So I have a guest that is new to fitness training with me. When we do leg day she tells me that she feels some pain just above and just below her kneecaps.

I watch her form to be sure she does not lock her knees. The weight is low due to volume training. Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks

Could be a lot of culprits here. What's the depth of the squat? Where is the knee traction going (outside/in)?

We really need more information here. When does it hurt? During flexion or extension? What exercise is she doing when it hurts and at what point in the motion does it bother her? Both upper and lower at the exact same time?

There is no universal standard for "form" on complex moves like a squat in particular where targeted depth should be derived from things like bone length and flexibility. Are you a CPT? If you are, you should know this.

I am not a CPT. Just getting my friend into fitness. We are doing seated leg press and seated leg extentions when she feels it. That's all I know for now.

Yeah, she may not have found the right stance for her to do the exercise well. I know butt wink isn't what is being talked about but the video does help show how even a slightly different stance can make a worthwhile difference.

That video has a girl demonstrator...

Is she stretching at all?

Try foam rolling her quad or do a couch stretch

Get you some knee sleeves.

Rehbands are a pretty good brand. Keeps your knees supported and comfortable.

I had a similar pain and was diagnosed with IT Band Friction Syndrome.

Someone mentioned a knee sleeve. It's truly amazing how well these things work. I had some patella issues and got one and it was night and day. No pain, could do every lift and plyo with it on but without it there was no way. I think mine was a mueller (sp?) with a little gel pad around the knee cap and that thin flexible metal on each side. Very lightweight and not burdensome at all.

Thanks for the reccomentation.I may set some knee sleeves for myself too. How do you gauge you correct size? I'm sure I will buy online.

I think it's the circumference of your mid thigh or around your knee. It usually says on the package and academy has little paper measuring rulers for that sole purpose that are free.

It's by calf and knee circumference. If you have particularly large calves, you definitely need to include their measurement.
