Is there any functional benefit to bar bench

Aside from being trapped under a small european car with your hands trapped against your ribs? Or is it just asthetics and dick measuring with numbers? I’ve heard multiple athletes say getting good on it doesn’t translate to much. Is this true?

For most sports, close grip, dips and ohp have more direct carryover. Chest isn't huge in a lot of sports, and more tricep focused stuff tends to do more for sports performance.
It's a good overall upper body strength tester and most of us aren't only about athletic performance, though.

Thanks for the reply. I was pointed to dumbell bench many years ago. I see lots of people still doing bar bench. In the information age, I would think if dumbell bench was really better, more people would have moved on from bar bench. Is here really any difference between the two?

Ask yourself this. What is the point of any exercise? Is it functional, aesthetics, or general conditioning? Functionally it is a very good compound movement where you can overload with much more weight than DB. Aesthetically it will make your chest and arms grow very large. General conditioning it hits a lot of body parts in one movement.
Why do people do DB? Better ROM for aesthetics.

Look at pictures of old time manual laborers. Very little chest development. Not much IRL translates to that movement. Even old school strongmen had underdeveloped chests by today's criteria. But as others said, it's a good overall exercise. Might as well do it as anything else. Most of us aren't trying to get in shape for shoveling coal.

The only reason to do barbell bench is if you are a power lifter or trying out at the NFL Combine.

Why not range of motion for it's own sake? I don't want to lose flexibility or rom to gain a little more size.

it's a cool, functional exercise for people with a bit of natural power.
hated on by people who aren't strong enough to put up numbers.
it's a solid compound lift that develops the upper body.
i do it twice a week, 4 sets each time. goes great with weighted chest dips, lying tri extensions and incline bench.
not sure what all the fuss is about.

Have you ever thrown a punch?

Makes you stronger and adds size to your chest. Is it “functional” to have more upper body strength? Obviously. If you don’t like bench, don’t do it. Athletes train in a very specific way that is tailored to the sport they play. Some do bench, some don’t.

Unless you train bench for years and years or take PEDs, you won’t lose that. I’ve added some big gains over the last 5 years. A lot of it because of bench. I didn’t lose my flexibility. But, to be fair, I was never very flexible. Something I need to work on.
