Since I've started working out regularly I've shed a little over 30 pounds but it must be water weight because I still have a gut. Id have thought when I was at 220 that by 190 id look the way I did when I weighed 190 in highs school but so far that isn't the case. Am I not hitting my core hard enough or is their some core workout I'm missing?

As you age, cortisol tends to make you retain belly fat.

You may also not have as much muscle mass as you did in HS, and need to lose more fat.

Squats and deadlifts work your core. So do loaded carries, which are a great alternative to cardio.

Ultimately, you can't spot train your flab.

No offense but when he says diet he doesn't mean "trying to eat good". You gotta get crazy strict. Better genetics allows for less strict on the diet.

Yea he is talking about track all your macros and making sure you stay in a deficit. Working core can help them show at a higher bf% but bottom line is you need to get down to 12% max to show abs.

I do a ton of variations of loaded carries as a metabolic finisher using kettlebells and sandbags, they are great for the core as well as developing grip strength and shoulder stability. Crunches and situps are not great exercises for the core- there are so many others that are better. My favorites are ab wheel rollouts, swiss ball planks, Turkish get-ups and hanging leg raises.

You shred your core in the kitchen not in the gym

I don't do any ab workouts in my weekly routine yet I have visible abs

You build abs by dieting and then lifting heavy on your compound lifts and other lifts like chin ups

Show me a guy who can deadlift 2.5-3x his weight who has a weak core, yeah its not happening

Genetics certainly help but its all diet and hard work. Both my parents are overweight and I'm starting to get abs coming in because I do the two above mentioned things.
