Does it really matter what you consume after a workout?

I mean, as long as you get your carbs and your protein, does it matter whether you drink a protein shake or eat a cheeseburger?

9 times out of 10 I'd say it doesn't have to be strict but it also depends on what the person/athletes sport or goals are. Obviously a cyclist and a bodybuilder in his last 4 weeks for contest will have different needs

In general it doesn't have to be rigid

I have never been strict enough to do immediately before or after. I did it one span of two days and forgot to do it the rest.

Yes and no. Does it matter for the normal guy? Absolutely not, but after a hard workout it's hard to digest a really heavy meal, at the same time it's the best time for nutrition partitioning so it's kinda of a damned if you do, damned if you don't. I say all that to eat what the hell you want, just make sure your macros on a weekly basis are where you want them.

There is no such thing as a 30 minute anabolic window if that’s what you’re asking. Hit your macros for the day, that’s all that matters.

I stopped drinking protein after my workouts about 6 months ago and drink BCAA’s instead. I’ve dropped about 15lbs (195-180) since then, increased my strength, and significantly lowered my body fat.

I'm not talking about a window. I'm talking about how lots of people say you should have carbs and protein after a workout, not referencing a specific time frame.

They claim high carb after a workout to replenish the glycogen stores you lost in your muscle during the workout. I’m not sure how much scientific evidence there is to back it up, though

I did the same thing a little over a year ago. Over a similar span I lost a similar amount (starting from 185), although my strength did not increase. But it didn't decrease over that time frame either even though I was only consuming about 2200 calories/day, and I suspect the BCAA's allowed that.

If you lost weight and strength did not decrease then I’d argue to say you got stronger.. at least relative to your body mass.

Everyone is different but for me supplemental protein was making me bloated even after trying many different brands. I now take a full meal replacement supplement instead by Redcon 1 MRE that is whole foods blended into a powder and drink that as a mid day shake around 3 and workout at 4:30 pm.

There’s actually a really good Joe Rogan podcast that tackles this. He had a dietitian on there that’s developed post workout supplements for various companies. Can’t think of the guys’ name but it’s relatively recent. Maybe a year old at the most. It’s on YouTube.
