I know I’ve seen way worse form from people using a belt. Learning how to squat and deadlift properly with out a belt first is way more important to get the fundamentals down
Correlation doesn't equal causation, though. The belt doesn't trigger worse form.
You may be right that some guys with bad form think slapping a belt on will help. That said, those guys are headed to snap city independent of the belt.

Theres a lot of debate here. So here's an article by Greg N. That should satisfy the court.

In my opinion, we should train mostly without belts but when maxing slapping one on to help increase abdominal pressure is a good idea. I rarely use a belt. But I'm no expert.

That's a great article. It reshaped the way I thought about belts when I first read it.
One of the huge takeaways is that belts don't reduce the activation of your abs, they increase it. A belt is a tool, and like most tools, if used right, has tremendous benefit.

I was about to say but didn't want to find any backing because I'm feeling particularly lazy.
Belt use, when done correctly, doesn't decrease ab involvement.

Belts just allow you to lift more weight via increased intrabdominal pressure
Most people don't understand this. THIS is the primary function of the belt, not protecting your back. The abs brace against the belt while the lift is performed, which is helped while using the Valsalva Maneuver.
