Diary of a 1st time marathon runner

On my phone and this will probably come out as a wall of text/tl;dr/etc...
So, I ran my first marathon Saturday. Even though my training was a bit weak with a couple of injuries and then a bout with a cold/congestion during the week of the race, I was still confident that I could easily run it in less than 4 hours, probably less than 3:45, and possibly less than 3:30. What follows is the reality of my disaster of a race:
Mile one - tried to start nice and easy. Felt pretty good. 7:45... I knew this was a little faster than what I wanted.
Miles 2-10 - settled into a nice 8:00 pace. Everything going according to the plan.
Miles 11-14 - starting to slow a bit, between 8:15-8:30 miles, but still felt ok. Hit the 13.1 in 1:50.
Miles 15-17 - "damn... getting tired" 9:00-9:30 pace.
Mile 18 - "holy shite, I thought you were supposed to 'Hit the wall' at mile 20". 10:00 pace that included some walking.
Mile 20 - screw this, I'm done. 12:00 pace that may have been equal parts running and walking.
Miles 21-26 - FML. I've died and gone to hell. If I somehow make it to the finish, I'll never do this again.
Mile 26.0-26.2 - mustered up everything left in the tank to run across the finish line, again renewing my vow to never sign up for another. Finish time - 4:21. Complete failure, other than the fact that I finished.
Today, after a short recovery jog/run - started looking for a good marathon to try next year.

Sounds almost exactly like my first marathon
I was cruising to a 3:30 pace for the first 20 Miles then completely blew up and basically dragged myself that last 10k to a 4 flat
The wall is very real

Identical experience for me. Breaking 4 hours was my absolute bare minimum goal. Simply fell apart and finished in 4:02, still haven't gotten over it. Headed to Austin for a rematch one day.
Most importantly, congratulations on getting it done.

I did my first half last weekend.
I had done numerous pace runs that should have brought me under 2 hours. Hills everywhere and hitting a wall mile 10 completely destroyed me. I still finished at 2:08 so I’m not that pissed but I’m not happy. Next one won’t have that many hills.
Congrats though. You finished.

Thanks. And the same to you. That's the biggest thing I walked away with... along with a need for revenge.

Yep. I got pressured into the half by a running buddy to begin with and never intended to do one in this life. But I’ll be damned if I’m not going to run the same race next year and not beat 2 hours. And run a full.

this is why my goal is only to do 10:30-11:00 pace. May be slow, but I think I can do it and remain injury free. Alternate between easy and medium pace every 2 minutes helps me a ton too

i envision my first marathon as me calling for an amberlamps around mile 8-11.

sounds pretty bad. Use this one to learn and kick the next one's arse. I want to race a marathon one day and my goal would be sub 3:00, but I think my injury-free training days are over.

That last bit where you repeat to yourself over and over, "never doing this again" almost always turns into, "I can do better next time" after a couple days of recovery.

Ran my first marathon this weekend. I'm not going to lie I read this post and thought that wont be me.
This was exactly what happened to me! I haven't gotten to the point where I want to try again yet. I am pretty disappointed I couldn't crack 4
As I think about it, I keep coming back to "How do you train for the last 6 miles?"
