Crepinsek Safety Squat Bar Review

I recently acquired a new piece of equipment. It is the Safety Squat Bar (SSB) by Crepinsek. For those of you who do not know what a SSB is, it is a bar that has a yoke and handles in the center. The idea was to move the hands to either the handles or to grab the rack uprights. This allows people with shoulder problems to continue to work on squats and to also allow overloading by grabbing the rack.
There are many different brands of the SSB but some should not be considered as the engineering design of the bar was not thought of and instead was just made to "copy" the more expensive brands. Reputable brands include anyone like EliteFTS, Rogue, Crepinsek, Black Widow, and Watson. A side benefit of the design of the SSB was that it actually pitches you forward during the squat and so more posterior and core work is performed. Another useful feature of the bar is that since the weight tips forward a little, you can actually let go of the handles and be hands free. This allows you to grab the rack to better control yourself. Louie Simmons of Westside sometimes refers it as the deadlift squat bar because it helps a ton for the deadlift.
I used this bar last night and I was absolutely humbled. I trained heavy squats the night before but I could only do 245 on the bar the first time. It will progress but it is a weird feeling the first time you use this.
Things that you can do with a SSB are:
Calf raises (flat bars usually try to roll off the back)
Good Mornings (way more comfortable and won't roll up the back)
SSB squats (helps to keep the body upright during the regular squat and also helps the deadlift)
Hatfield Squat (this is similar to a leg press)
Front squats (you can turn the bar around)
Westside style box squats
Now specific to Crepinsek.
Regarded as one of the best SSB around. It weighs 65lbs and is about 4" longer than a typical barbell. It comes with 5" stubby handles but can be swapped out with other handles as they are tension bolted on. Ralph Crepinsek is a very very nice person to deal with. He is very personable and makes good products. I highly recommend his products. He gave me a rundown on everything about the SSB and how to use it. The website is 1500

Thank you for the review
This was my experience as well the first few times I used an SSB. If you keep using it, your core will get much stronger and your regular squats will shoot up.
I had shoulder surgery 1 year ago and an SSB allowed me to keep training squats when there was no way I could get hands back to stabilize the bar.
I am also a big fan of Hatfield squats. Not sure about strength gains, but they are great for hypertrophy and great as a finisher

You have a lot of markers for that small of a board...

I hope so. I think I could have done more last night as it was just a "test" workout and I was in a jacket in the garage when it was cold AF and I didn't warm up. But damn did it feel heavy for 245

You can never have enough markers! Those things get dry so quick in the garage. Plus they came in a package and I like the eraser hung up like that and it came with it's own markers.

I was leaving work.
How does it feel balance wise? And I don't have that many questions to be honest, I already knew it was the best ssb on the market, was just hoping you felt the same way.

I haven't put it through it's paces to the max but it feels cool that I can let go of it and do Hatfield squats. My back already knows it's gonna be in fire

Getting better at it. Did 295 on speed squats followed by 295 3x5 regular squats.
It's also fantastic for front squats. Did 245 for 3x5.

Don't shoot me or downvote me into ban land but they use the pizz out of those bars in the football weight room at Alabama. I seent them.

Just maxed out on SSB. Got 455. Getting used to it. I found out I'm better with flat shoes for squatting. Couldn't get 445 with oly shoes.

So, I bought a cheap SSB off Amazon. I've regularly used it, but there are areas that the design quality isn't great.
I decided if I regularly use it, it was time to bite the bullet and upgrade. Just ordered the EliteFTS SS Yoke bar. Hopefully I'll have it by the new year.
Even though my old SSB was crappy quality, it was still great for training. I'm really looking forward to the EliteFTS bar and giving it a shot.

I was actually going to get the elite fts but it went out of stock at its sale. I still love the SSB and use it for so much.

Thanks for posting this detailed review with nice pics. I came across this Googling for a gym in Baton Rouge that has a SSB so I could try one before buying. Only gym I see is Centurion Fitness, so I may go see if I can pay to try it before I buy one.
I've got elbow issues that a low bar (& even high bar) squat aggravate, so am hoping a SSB will help with that like it does the shoulders.
Am wondering if anyone else has seen an SSB in their gym in BR, and if so, where? Thanks in advance.

A couple thoughts. Shoulder mobility did wonders for elbow pain from squatting for me.
And yeah, a SSB should totally ease up any upper body pain from squatting. You have to concentrate on back tightness, but you don't have to engage the lats from an extended position like in a straight bar squat.
This warmup alone basically cured my elbow issues from squatting.
Banded dislocations

Rep520: Thank you! I also LOVE these banded dislocations as a warmup, and also find myself doing them on days off or even twice a day just to undo the wrongs I do to my shoulders hunched at a desk. Doing them with bands is so much more comfortable than a pipe or stick, because you can really dial in the tension based on where you grip the bands. Unfortunately they nor the dozens of other hacks I've tried for my elbows have cured my cubital tunnel & tendonosis, so I'll likely buy the SSB before giving up squats.

Good luck. I think the SSB will definitely allow you to squat. It was explicitly designed for people with shoulder and elbow problems that couldn't get into position for a straight bar squat.
A good SSB, you don't even need your hands on the bar, let alone getting the elbows or shoulders into a bad position.
Another tweak for squats without shoulder or elbow issues are belt squats. Buy a dipping belt, hang weight from it and squat away with no upper body load.
Again, good luck and Merry Xmas.

Ok, I tried my EliteFTS SS Yoke bar for the first time tonight.
Compared to the cheap SSB, it's like going from a Geo Metro to a luxury car. Balance, padding and weight placement are night and day.
I used to worry about stability in Hatfield squats. Not any more. I did regular low box squats and just knocked out some Hatfield squats at the end of the set. No hands, perfect stability.
Love it.
