Figured I'd ask here since several of you take supplements and some are around my age (40s) and maybe taking collagen for aging joints.

Several of the ladies in the perimenopausal group I'm in have suggested collagen to help with some of the joint discomfort that comes with the drop in estrogen. I know folks who have taken it and seen positive results in nail and hair growth/strengthening. But I'm curious about the effect on the joints.

Curious if anyone here has been taking collagen for joint support? If so, what brands have worked for you?

My wife takes collagen for both joint support and perimenopause. Definitely seen good results. A full hormone screen and resulting hormone cream has been huge for her though. Night and day difference in her mood and quality of life. She can’t believe that women went so long without proper hormone analysis in perimenopause.

Thanks for the info.

My other symptoms aren't quite "there" yet for potential estrogen supplementation (per my convo with the OB/GYN). I'm grateful he's on top of newer treatments though, when we get there.

For years, doctors were utilizing research on hormonal supplementation (specifically estrogen) from the 70s and 80s when birth control and other hormonal supplements were at astronomical levels. So my OB/GYN is open to supplementation but I do have a strong history (Mom and Maternal Grandmother) of estrogen-based breast cancer in my family and migraine with aura triggered by hormonal fluctuations at this point so we're going conservative first.

I’ve been taking glucosamine and chondroitin for years for joint health and I can tell if I am off of it for more than a week. I only recently regularly added bovine collagen (Naked brand-it dissolves great). It certainly hasn’t hurt anything and seems to have taken what little joint pains I had from overuse and taken the edge off. It all may be in my head. But I have also noticed improvement in fingernail and hair health.

we get this a costco, i throw it in my coffee. I thought it was a women's meme supplement for awhile but been doing it daily for a couple years.

I can't it solved knee pay during marathon training but i felt better during that cycle two years ago than i did for the half the year before when i wasn't taking it. Could have just been in better shape.

I get the Vital Proteins brand at COSTCO. Don’t get the chocolate flavored. I have been putting a couple of scoops in my daily smoothie for a couple of years. I didn’t have joint problems when I started taking it but I am old and try to walk/jog a lot and haven’t developed any. My skin got noticeably smoother on my face, though.

Try getting a couple of containers of this or the one above - whichever is on sale. Orgain is on sale at COSTCO until August 24.

Not collagen related, but have you tried Fish Oil. I find that fish oil does an amazing job with my joints.

I’ve taken collagen protein from earth fed muscle company.

My joints don’t ache much at all, I’ll also take tablets. You can also consider bone broth of if you want to be a little more primal you can cook bone marrow.

The Vital Proteins is what I take. It's always $7-9 cheaper at Sam's vs. Costco. Haven't looked on Amazon though.

My wife takes it. FYI the Costco version of VP doesn’t have Hyaluronic acid which their mainstream version does. At least when we looked at it.

I use Nordic Naturals. No burps. Works good for joint pain in my hip.
It also is high in Omega 3 fatty acids which is good for the heart.

Just know that fish oils are known to cause heart palpitations for some. Do your research.

Curcumin worked great for me BUT it has high amounts of oxalate which causes kidney stones. I had to stop taking it.

As collagen is concerned, I have a family member that uses collagen and says it works for him for joint pain.
I am thinking about giving it a try myself.

Collagen is rich in Glycine. While not an essential amino acid, it is directly responsible for maintaining inflammation. I started taking collagen just for that.

40s ehh? Wait till you start hitting your middle 50s and beyond. It will really start to get 'fun'.

Anywho, here is interesting reading:

quote:

With aging, collagen and elastin in the skin decrease, leading to sagging, fine lines and deep wrinkles. These changes often arise from oxidative stress, inflammation, and changes in enzyme activities.

Collagen is the main structural protein of the extracellular matrix of connective tissue, and has a positive role in healing, bone regeneration and anti-aging of skin. The active collagen tripeptides (CPs), such as Gly-Pro-Hyp (GPH) and Pro-Hyp (PH), have shown effectiveness in anti-skin aging.

Now this is kinda perplexing:

Overall, the study's findings support the combined use of CP and EP as dietary supplements to effectively combat skin aging in the skin of young and middle-aged.

BTW, see what cutting out all sugar in your diet. That stuff is just about in every type of food you buy at the grocery store. Sugar has many different names but in the end, its still sugar and it hard on your body.
