Starting a new workout regimen. Been a few years since I’ve been working out consistently (lifting weights and building muscle mass). Not trying to bulk up, just want to get toned and generally stronger. Anyone have recs on what to use? Specific supplement recs are a big help

In my 20s and athletic build and healthy

Good diet, programming and recovery is 95-97% of controlling your results. Supps are that extra 3-5%.

Supps with the most validity to them based on my review of things:

Protein powder.
Creatine.
Certain vitamins if you are deficient in them.
Melatonin if you have sleep issues.

I mean, they kind of go hand in hand.

There are tons of supps out there that can help performance and recovery. Creatine is a staple just about every mix. It works and it’s cheap. You can add B-12 for energy, L-Arginine to help open up blood flow and BCAAs for muscle recovery and increased performance. You can buy each of those in bulk at low prices. I used to buy Hard Rhino. You could get a kilogram bag for around $15 on Amazon. I highly suggest researching any supps before use. Some brand are reputable, others carry a risk.

ETA: Rep520 said it, though. Supps are just a little extra help. Diet and exercise programming are what you need to think about first.

If I generally get sufficient protein via diet, how much do the BCAAs add if taken as a supplement? Are there any significant risks to taking daily on a long term basis?

There is always a risk when taking supps. That’s why you should research the supp and the company from which you buy it. I suggest taking it only on training days and about half the reccommended dosage until you acclimate to it. I also advise you stop taking it if you have any bad reactions. I used to take 5 grams of each supp before and after lifts. If you can still buy powdered caffeine, use at your own risk. It’s easy to OD on pure caffeine. Just use common sense and do your due diligence and you should be fine.

I use Ghost stuff. The pre workout doesn’t have creatine so if you want that you’d have to add it.

Find a preworkout with creatine already added and it will be one less thing to worry about

Is there a generally recognized favorite preworkout drink with creatine? Or is like everything else and to each their own?

I think most BCAAs recommend that you take them daily, just half the dosage on your days off of the gym

10-35 grams a day should be no issue at all and you wont get the side effects like some of the more intense pre-workout supplements

I guess this is a good place for a product review.

Just tried a new preworkout called "LIT AF" made by the people that do Bucked Up I think. Stupid name, but it's one of the better pre's I've had. It's a nootropic, which I used to think was BS marketing, but it really works. Workouts are super focused.

Downside is no creatine or BCAAs, but those are easy to supplement from outside sources.

Some sort of protein supplement is really the only must have. Preferably whey isolate. (Some people add casien at night). I personally like Promix Unflavored since it’s just low calorie pure whey, no additives and grass-fed, but any whey isolate should do the trick.

Creatine monohydrate for added strength and mass. It makes you retain fluid, so some folks don’t take it due to added water weight and potential bloat. But it works.

A lot of people take preworkout supplements for energy, which are generally highly caffeinated powders, but also contain aminos(Arginine) to help with blood flow to the muscle(pump). Or you could just have a coffee and some arginine.

BCAAs. Basically to prevent muscle breakdown during exercise, but whey already has all the BCAAs in it, so it’s just a bit extra.
