I just got back into running during covid and am down 20lbs so far but my shoes are ready to be replaced. I get shin splints sometimes and have a pretty flat arch, so I would prefer a place that can put me in the right shoe after doing some tests. Which shop is the best at analyzing everything? I have always owned Brooks running shoes but am agnostic regarding brand.

Thanks

I don’t run, but I’ve been to the Varsity Sports store on Magazine a few times. Staff was nice.

I’ve been to Louisiana Run and Walk Co and Fleet Feet Metairie...both were good...both put me in stability shoes. Can’t blame them bc I do pronate and didn’t know better at the time, but stability shoes give me knee problems.

Just be wary of what they recommend. If you’re running in neutral shoes right now and don’t have any nagging pain, tell them that you’d prefer to stay in a neutral shoe. Also, very good chance they’ll put you in another pair of Brooks...nothing wrong with that, but local stores seem to really push Brooks, Asics, and Mizuno.

Ended up going to Louisana running co. Brought in my old brooks and she looked at the wear on them and determined the shoes I had were rolling my foot outward even more than it already was.

I tried on a bunch, ended up with Altra Paradigms. They are zero drops. She said the first few runs are going to be rough because I’ve never run on zero drops. Said it will be using new muscles.

Good stuff. Yeah, definitely ease into the Altra. I’d rotate the brooks and Altra for a bit until you’re acclimated. Not sure I could go zero drop, but I’m enjoying my Hoka’s with 5mm drop vs all the other shoes I’ve run in between 8 and 10mm

I ran a mile in them Saturday evening and my feet were super sore. Do you think I should only run a mile at a time for a few runs until I get used to it? Or just listen to my body?

Have to let some other chime in as I know we have a few Altra guys.

My guess is just listen to your body. It’s tough to go from 10 to 12mm drop to 0mm, so I’m sure it’s going to take some time to get used to.

I went straight into Paradigm 4.5's with no issues. Really help with my plantar's. On the flip side, now that they are wearing, I find that my right foot wants to pronate, which has never been an issue before. My guess is the extra flex in the thick cushion. Going to try the new 5.0's, and see if I just have too many miles on the old ones.

I am actually recovering from plantars that I had at the beginning of Rona. I’m hoping these help with that and with my shin splints. Gonna go run another mile in them at lunch.

Double checked, I’m in the paradigm 4.5.

Just got back from a quick 1 mile. Feet feel 10x better than when I ran in the altras for the first time on Saturday. Different areas of my feet are sore vs. the Brooks (which she said would happen)

I was worried after the first run, but this quick jog was reassuring that my feet will get used to the shoes.

Going to lower drop has helped my shin splints big time. Glad these are working for you, happy running

Varsity if you want to be attended by pretty, young saleswomen. Louisiana Running Co if you want someone to actually examine your gait and help you pick out the right shoes.

Either way, you get a t-shirt.

When I switched, I was in high lift Sauconys, and doctor prescribed insoles. The kid working at Fleet Feet looked at my setup, and immediately knew I was in lift, plus more lift. The opposite of what I should be in. Zero drops stretch your achilles and calf muscle, just by you walking. You will love Altras. I am sold.
