Unless you are only going to monitor things for a short period of time, then a chest strap is a ridiculous recommendation. No one is going to strap a monitor around your torso daily.
Agreed. But since the OP is looking for something to wear specifically when just exercising, I don’t see why it’s such a ridiculous recommendation.

Because the premise of wearing it only when exercising is ridiculous. That provides nothing of value

If you’re doing zone training based on HR it absolutely provides something of value.
The OP asked for a way to measure his HR while exercising. Unless I’m missing something, I fail to understand why a chest strap can’t do that specific job.

I would get a Whoop and buy the bicep band. I love mine.

If you're deep in the Apple ecosystem and #1 priority is smart features and phone integration, get an apple watch.
Even if these aren't a priority and you have an iPhone, an apple watch is still probably your best bet.
If not, get a Garmin. I like the venu and forerunner series

It does need to be charged daily but it is rarely an issue for me.
I have a gen 10 and I charge it for an hour or so while I'm working, lasts all the way until after my evening workout. I charge for another hour, hit the shower, and have it back on to track my sleep. Wake up and hit my morning workout with plenty of charge.
I only take it off twice a day and one of those is to shower.

Does your iPhone have to be on you for you to receive texts and calls on the garmin?

Yes, your Garmin doesn’t get a cellular signal, it connects to your phone through Bluetooth.
