So currently I run/sprint twice a week, elliptical twice a week, deadlift once a week, squat once a week, jump rope once a week, and do arms/shoulders once a week. This is in addition to about 8-9 BJJ sessions a week (some 2-a-days).

What else can I add that would help round me out?

just do a basic 2 day a week 531 template. and if you are doing 9 bjj sessions and are not competing professionally, cut all that other shite out.

then stop doing so much bjj. 5 sessions a week is more than enough.

lift twice weekly using 531 full body

calisthenics one day

run twice a week.

spread it out as much as possible and you beeter be sleeping your arse off and eating your arse off.

Trying to do 100 sessions in 100 days; personal goal. Sleep and nutrition have been key. So far I’ve been able to squeeze in a third, regular workout of weights, running, or both without ill effects. I’m at about day 40.

Look up Alex sterner and Electrum performance.

They are the main strength and conditioning coaches that team Atos and Andre Galvao use

There’s also juggernaut training system as well led by chad Wesley smith, he’s a former world champion power lifter, elite shot putter if I recall, and now a blue belt in bjj with Gracie barra. I know he’s trained Otavio Sousa for his strength and conditioning

I’d personally use kettlebells, bands, trap bar for deadlifts, squats, farmers walks, use your gi for pullups, maybe even invest in a mace or Persian/Indian clubs or a paraball

Grip strength exercises and yoga. BJJ is just yoga while trying to hurt someone. The breath work aspect of yoga goes a long way in BJJ.

Back in the early part of my BJJ journey when you couldn’t peel me off the mat, my biggest issue was my cardio. I would get gassed on long rolls, especially against bigger dudes that were on my level or above. For that reason, I got into swimming. In my opinion, that is hands down the best way to work on your gas outside of mat time. I also got into yoga and as Rickson so eloquently puts it, you should definitely be working on proper breathing techniques.

Surely I’m not the only one who doesn’t for a split second read “best complementary BJ.”

Back in my 20's with a little enhancement, yes.

Now at 50, pre-Covid before July, I walked around at 220. I actually am back to around 210 right now.

Beauty of BJJ is that you don't need to be a gorilla to be really good. Our lead instructor is a 3 stripe BB under Royler and maybe 160 soaking wet and he can tap everyone in class including my instructor who is a 1 stripe BB and weighs about 240 in less than 2 minutes.
