as a runner first and foremost, I'm intrigued by Zwift/indoor trainer, mostly for when it's mid July in La. and I need to get a mid day workout in, as opposed to running... that said, not sure I could remove my rear bike tire without totally butchering the derailleur, e
If you have a treadmill zwift has running trails. Never tried it but it's there and I don't think they make you pay the monthly fee to use it.

Zwift recently laid off a ton of people and it sounds like they’re not going to pursue development of the running platform.
ETA: Or maybe not. Apparently Eric Min has posted the following on Facebook:

“Does this mean running is less important? No, not at all. Running isn’t going anywhere and it will get more attention over time. We just felt the way we were organised to support it wasn’t set up for success. It is absolutely core to the Zwift experience as will other modalities when they come online. On the whole, we will be investing MORE in the product than ever before. I hope this sheds some light for everyone.”

I've got a Tacx Neo that I am very very fond of. I run Zwift on my iphone and then screen mirror it on my projector screen in my theater room. It works great. I don't do any talking to other zwifters so I don't feel the need to have a pc hooked up. Tacx has their own app where you can sync to the trainer and use instead of zwift. It is a real video simulator but I have found that the resolution gets off in the margins so when used it comes across with a distorted picture so I just run zwift.

lnomm34, What do I actually need to run Zwift? I have a few road bikes, but I've never had any type of trainer. i was looking at getting Kinetic Road Machine and running the app through apple TV.
I see so much info on power meters and cadence meters, and TBH, I have not clue on this stuff.
Thanks!

Not too familiar with that Kinetic but it looks fairly basic. Max incline is only 10% and I dont think you get power or cadence either.
Any of the wheel-off smart trainers would be a little better route, but also a bit more expensive. They will give you higher inclines, better accuracy, and power/cadence etc

I am a trainerroad person. I prefer to watch movies, shows, and old races when on the trainer. Plus it forces you to follow structure which zwift has but is not as good as trainerroad

You really don’t want a wheel-on trainer. You’d be much better off with a direct drive trainer (where you take your rear wheel off).
Tacx, Wahoo, and CycleOps/Saris are the leading brands. There are various models with various power accuracies, etc. Take a look at DC Rainmaker’s Trainer Guide
To run Zwift, download the app and it’s a monthly subscription at $15/month. You can run it on PC, Mac, Apple TV, iPad, or even iPhone. The experience is much better on bigger screen. I run Zwift on an Apple TV plugged into a 50” TV.
I hope that helps point you in a direction. Let me know if you have more questions!

I'll save up for one of those. I just bought a third bike (SS steel gravel bike) and got it way less than my budget, so I was just looking at using the remainder. That trainer I linked is 30% off through 4/15, so it brings it down like $350 for a smart trainer. I get that the direct drives are better though.
On the direct drives, will I have to buy an additional cassette that matches my bike to install on the trainer?

Some come with a cassette, some don't. Cassettes are (relatively) cheap, though.

Unrelated/kind of related, the type of bike you ride (for the most part) is sort of taken out of the equation for zwift racing? Basically, you can have a frame that fits you, good BB, Good Cranks, pedals that fit your shoes, chain, rear derailleur, and a rear shifter. Frame material, brakes, wheelset, and weight all don't matter. Pretty cool that someone who can't afford a pro race bike that can actually ride can compete with people they "couldn't afford" to race in real life.

So I wanted to test the waters on this. My friend gave me a fluid trainer to use and I ordered a Wahoo Speed and Cadence Sensor. I understand that this is the least sophisticated way to use zwift, but didn't want to drop a bunch of money and not like it. I did an initial ride and I don't feel like it is gathering information correctly.
What are typical rpms? I was spinning fast and it was saying my RPM range was in the 60's. I was making about 14mph on the flats, which in real life i usually make about 18 on flats (I average almost 14mph on my Single Speed Gravel Bike). Do I have the trainer set up wrong or are there any tips to make this more realistic? I appreciated the workout I got, but I would prefer to not get constantly dropped.
Average Power was 89 with a high of 139.
Average Cadence was 60 with a high of 70.
Eta. Figured.it out. Recalibrated sensors. Put 100psi in tire and selected the right trainer.
