Anyone else do flexible dieting (IIFYM)?

Stumbled on this 3 years ago on a Layne Norton website and havent looked back ever sense.
To me it just sounds like the easiest, most logical approach to dieting/lifestyle.
My number one rule is to hit my protein for the day and then i fill in my remaining macros with a good balance of fats and carbs.

It's becoming the new norm and is better suited for those dieting for a longer period of time.
I usually go by the 80/20 rule in weekdays eating mostly foods I consider nutritious and beneficial and the rest of my calories I eat anything I want.
Bottom line, as long as you are hitting your macro nutrient goals along with getting essential vitamins to fill the gaps and treat yourself daily to keep away from binging you're doing it right.

Yep I agree. None of those fad diets are sustainable long term

well they are but not by the majority of people. And they really arent fad diets.
I love the iifym approach its what I recommend to everyone just about. Layne has a program called avatar nutrition that you pay $10/month for and it gives you your weekly macros.
now with that being said I hate how people doing iifym complete disregard micronutrition and fiber. They see it as an ability to eat pop tarts all day and still lose weight. Sure for pure weight loss your body doesnt know the difference between the sugar in fruit and the sugar in chocalate, but for overall health, there is a big difference.
But other than those who take it to the extreme, its a great program especially for those with a lot of weight to lose.
Some like me though thrive on the extreme and need it to stick to anything more than a week or so.

I'm loving it. Hit your protein and fiber goals, then carbs and fats can be changed around to meet your needs. I typically strive for the macros I've been prescribed from Avatar but if I find I had a fat heavy day I'll steal away carbs..and vice versa.
I thought hitting the fiber goal was gonna be tough, but if I'm eating well most of the time it just kinda falls into place for me.

I agree with everything you've said.
I joined Avatar two weeks ago. Its really a great system, i just dont want to weight and do BF every week because it messed with my head.

avatar will not only adjust your macros on a weekly basis, its charts your progress. As you begin to slow down in the progress department and start getting into really low calories, it will adjust and tell you its time to start reverse dieting and it will spit out the macros for that.
essentially its a coach, not just a macro formula. And yes it is worth it if you don't have a complete understanding of how, why and when to adjust yourself. Also gives tons of info to chart and track progress.

Can you expand a little on this? My goal is to be a tiny little fragile stick. Skinny skinny. Model skinny. Genetics gave me extremely muscular calves, and my stomach tends to look defined enough for my purposes when I am thin.. so I'm not really looking to build muscle at this time. I also hate muscular thighs, I like the thigh gap look better
I am unfamiliar with reverse dieting, but I hear the term sometimes. Does this apply to someone with my goals?

Avatar is a great app.
Ive read a ton on different guys in that industry and think Layne Norton is one of the good guys. they worked on that site for 2 years.
Its really neat.

does it specifically tell you what you need to eat or makes recommendations or just gives you amounts to eat?
does it account for your workouts?

Reverse dieting is a method of very slowly increasing your caloric intake to help speed up your metabolism. For example, my previous weigh-in I was compliant and gain .25lb, so it increased my macros very slightly.. like 8g carb, 2g fat, 1g protein. It sounds like a little but over the course of 6 months, people can significantly increase the amount of calories they're eating without putting on a significant amount of weight.
I started reversing after I weighed in and Avatar decreased my macros and said that it doesn't recommend I continue eating so little. It sounds counter-intuitive to stop trying to lose weight for 6 months when I still have about 60 pounds to lose to reach my goal, but I was eating so little I was starting to feel really bad. If I can slowly increase my macros for 6 months and lose 1lb/week at 2000+ cals it'll be worth the pounds I may gain during the course of the reverse.
Gives you calories and macros, including fiber. Weigh in weekly and it adjusts macros (or doesn't adjust)based upon results. Takes the guesswork out of adjusting your macros.

just the macros. It is flexible diet basis. so long as it fits your macros.... eat it. Essentially you get all your protein first then make sure you get all your fiber in to make sure you are getting your micronutrients in, the rest of the cals/macros are fair game.

yes if you tell it to. Their are settings you can addjust like high carb or lower carb, higher protein etc.

This sounds like a fancy term for deficit eating vs. maintenance eating. No?
For example, I eat at a 300-500 calorie deficit because I'm still 5lb from my goal. When I reach my goal, I will re-calculate my TDEE and eat at that (which is my maintenance intake level). It is a slight increase, but I just refer to it as eating at maintenance.
