About 2 weeks ago I felt a little pain/stiffness in my middle upper back, right below the shoulder blades. It was more of an uncomfortable feeling than anything. I can feel it when bend over and the pain radiates more on the left side moving towards my ribs. For the first week I assumed I pulled a muscle and just figured it would go away on its own. This past week it has become more noticeable, I’m starting to get a dull pain below my left shoulder blade when I take a deep breathe. I can’t decide if it’s just a pulled back muscle or something else. I had a buddy tell me he had an issue with a slipped rib that created pretty similar problems.

I’m going to try a week of ice & heating and if doesn’t go away I’ll visit the doctor. Anyone else dealt with something similar?

Make sure it’s not heart attack symptoms.

I’m 29 with a clean bill of health, I don’t think it’s heart related. It feels more muscular.

Be careful man. I had a terrible backache that prevented me from sleeping. It was severe walking pneumonia. My point is - listen to the heart attack advice because your body is obviously giving you a loud warning of some kind. Not lecturing- just consider all the possibilities.

Thanks bud, I’ll keep that in mind. I actually had a yearly check up right when I started to have the discomfort in my back and I didn’t think to bring it up to the doctor because I figured it was just a tweaked muscle.

A good message or some acupuncture will probably get rid of it quicker than just waiting. To me it sounds like a muscle is tight and doesn't want to release. Will probably fix itself after awhile.

Pulled muscles can take weeks to heal. Obviously you should see someone if it continues.

Protection, rest, ice, compression, and elevation (known as the PRICE formula) is what is always recommended. Though compression isn't an option really and you can't really elevate something thats in line with your heart.

Very limited blood flow to the muscles along the spine. It can take weeks or even months to heal a strain. Soak in a hot tub regularly and stay active (walk, bike, elliptical...whatever is comfortable) to increase blood flow. If pain persists more than a couple months, go see an ortho or PT who knows what they are doing.
