I have a weird spot on my chest that I want to get looked at by a dermatologist. My Dad had a melanoma cut out a few years back, so I don't want to play around with it. Just wanted to see what everyone's experiences have been with it and if there is anything I can do to put my mind at ease. I tend to worry and overthink most things, so any information y'all can provide would be awesome. Thanks y'all.

Never had one but have had some moles/spots cut off to test. Even if it is melanoma I've heard it's not a huge deal.

Key with skin cancer is early detection and treatment. I had "pre"-melanoma removed from my hand a few years ago. They cut a quarter sized piece of skin out because of it. So far no other treatment.

Had one Surgically removed from my back 10 years ago, wasn't a huge deal as long as they get it all, yearly dermatologist checks since

I've had recurring Seborrheic keratosis which is a benign, non-cancerous lesion removed by cryotherapy a couple times and it was super simple. So simple in fact that I had them clean up some "age spots" on my hands at the same time just for my own vanity. The dermatologist took a biopsy of a spot on my back that turned out to be nothing; that one left a minor scar the size of a match head but aside from that nothing.
Definitely worth checking out though because I know someone who ignored theirs and found later that it was malignant and metastasized into lung cancer so the first symptom he knew (aside from the lesions he ignored) was difficulty breathing and hacking up blood.

Had a basal cell carcinoma on my head that I had cut out earlier this year. Those aren't really dangerous though. Wouldn't mess around with possible melanoma...get that checked ASAP

I had treatment for one melanoma a few years back. I’ve had other things treated so I was going to the dermatologist twice a year. The way it was explained to me, they caught the melanoma very early but the policy at their practice is finding melanoma triggers monthly reviews for a period of time. I’m back to two visits a year and no news is good news.

Yeah I have had two basil cell removed.
Not much to put your mind at ease other than ask them to do a “MOHs” procedure if they can.
It is where they shave it off in layers and inspect to make sure they have all of the tissue removed tbat has cancer, its less invasive and you have confirmation that it’s all gone immediately.

Melanoma is not to be taken lightly.

This isn’t true. If it is Melanoma In Situ then it hasn’t gone through the basement membrane and they will just do a wide local excision (they will cut a big chunk).
If it has invaded and it is true melanoma then it is a big deal and will likely involve a local surgery and systemic therapy (chemo or immunotherapy). That depends on if Mets are detectable and such.
There is also a range of atypia before you get to actual melanoma in situ.
But this is kinda an over simplification.
