I've been running a good bit as of late and the thought occurred to me, can I break 60 seconds in the 400 right now?

Idk, I have never attempted and have no bearing but I think I would bet money that I could break 1:10 right now.

Could you?

It's definitely tough. I ran the 400 in high school and our state champ ran it in 49 seconds. 60 is still pretty much a 95% sprint all the way around for good runners. My times were in the 52-54 range. Doubt I could break 60 these days without some training.

Did you ever run a 400 in high school/college and what was your fastest time? 400 is not an easy distance, you need speed and some endurance.

I'm in above average shape for someone in my 40s and I'm not sure I could run 60 secs without some serious training. And this is coming from someone that would run quarter repeats at 60 seconds, albeit many years ago and 20 lbs lighter (I was tall, fast, and very thin!).

I have been running sprint intervals lately and I "sprint" 200m then stride out the next 200m. Just for fun I decided to try the whole 400 last week and that last 150 is no joke.

i was a :52-55er in HS and my current PR as a 35 year old guy is 64ish. I think it could get it below 60 if i trained exclusively for that, and i could probably get it with spikes on a legit track.

that being said, i have no desire to live in glory days and try to accomplish it.

Right on, all of the best 400m I ran, that last 150m felt like I was dying second by second, but still trying to run fast. Maybe I'm still physically capable but its a special type of training needed for the 400m.

That said to OP, go for it and let us know what happens. Also next time I find my way to track and don't mind warming up for 30 mins and possible puking after I will try to see how fast I can go.

Ross and Marshall’s keep having some spikes on sale for about $10. I keep wanting to buy them but then I know that would have to justify actually going to the track for sprints.

i would bet you 25 dollars you can not.

I would also bet you 25 million thst I could not. I would run a heart rate monitor on to prevent sandbagging

I used to run in a club track league in the summer to stay in shape for football in high school. The 400m distance is freaking soul sucking. It's much harder than the 800m in my opinion because you can at least cruise a bit at that distance. If you want to be competitive in the 400m, it's all out the entire race.

Yea. IMO it's the worst race there is. I don't count distance because that's a different type of running. But watching someone run the 400 fast and smooth is pretty fun.

Sub 60? 41 years old. No chance, I could hit a 55 in high school but that was me being on the track team and being the best 300m hurdler in the school (had to do a lot of 400’s in practice for training).

About 3-4 times I ran on the 4x400 because someone couldn’t and I was the 5th best option at that race in a 1600 person high school.

No way I didn’t slow up below 60 in 1 year let alone 23. That race is a b***h.

If as an adult you can train yourself below 60 in a non-competitive environment, that would be one heck of an accomplishment!

I was a 52s 400m guy in HS.

I doubt I could run sub 60 these days.

Maybe sub 70. Maybe.

I ran 400 through 3200, 800 was by far the hardest for me

I only ran track one year (JR) and I ran the 3200 relay because they needed a body.
The 800 sucked and I was sucking wind after handing off the baton every time.
I dreaded track meets.

The 800 sucked

I’d say you could probably be close to 1:10. No way in hell youre breaking :60 though unless you’ve been throwing in some speed based reps.

I’m naturally gifted and don’t like to brag but I routinely run 200m in 55 seconds.

I mean you can cruise anything. It's pretty much universally accepted among track coaches that the most difficult event is either the 800 or 400 hurdles. The 400 isn't easy but you are really only dealing with around 100-150 meters of heavy amounts of lactate that you have to buffer.

Um, maybe for the best HS guys and college runners who can come thru 300m at 35-38 secs or faster....for most normal kids running a 400 (and probably for everyone in this thread) that bear can jump on your back a lot earlier.
