I could be wrong, so I'd love some insight, but I read a while back that you won't build muscle mass doing something like pushups every single day.. you're supposed to give yourself 48 hours of rest because muscles don't grow when they're being worked.. they grow when they're recovering from being worked.
Is this true?
If I'm trying to get some definition, should I not do things like pushups and situps every day?
And if I need this rest period, can I still swim on my "recovery" days?

It's an oversimplification. You won't maximize your gains without an appropriate amount of rest and you will expose yourself to an increased risk of injury (which will set you back and ultimately hinder your ability to make/keep progress.

If you don't train at all now you will gain muscle mass by doing just about anything as long as you eat. You do not need 48 hours of rest when doing bodyweight exercises like push-ups. If you were lifting iron you would need to allow rest time for certain exercises but not for others like squats.
You can swim with no problem.
You, again, can do push-ups every day.

if this were a "who wants to run ten thousand miles this millennium" thread then I would have bowed out quietly while you and the other iron-man nut jobs ran through your shoes.

False. You can definitely build muscle mass with push-ups. Is it the most effective way to build mass? No, but it will make muscles hypertrophy.

This is true, but certain muscles recover faster from certain exercises. If you're in decent shake than doing push-ups everyday should be all right. A good litmus test would be if your still sore from the last day. If you are even a little, your muscles are still repairing. Don't work them. It won't hurt them, but you won't get much benefit.

See the litmus test. You'll definitely get definition from push-ups. Sit ups, not as much. I don't find them to be very effective. For definition in that area lose body fat and stability training.
And for a woman working the pectoralis major and minor increases chest wall tension and makes boobs look perkier. It's science.

Yes
