I have a friend in NC who son is 15 and always scoring around 2 to 3 under par.

Is this good enough for him to play in college?

Depends what he does in tournaments. If he is -2 or -3 per round and able to put together 4 rounds at -9 to -12, he can pretty much go play wherever he wants, provided he can do that in tournaments.

Depends on the tees and how he is in playing in AJGA events...From the tips - that would be good for small time D1 or lower IMHO... I’ve seen a kid offered by Auburn as a freshman... he got cocky and said no... kids caught up with him and he scrambled to get a low level D1 offer at the end... problem with golf is there are so few scholarships - it’s not like they take 85 kids like football... it’s very competitive...

Hijack - how old were your girls when then really started playing? Practice, working on form, etc.

That kind of scoring would put him in the top 20. Name the school and you have an offer.

If he was doing this in AJGA/USGA/invitational events, he would be one of the top recruits in the nation, even at 15.

The simple answer is yes.

Even if he is 2-3 under at a crappy 6000 yd muni playing for nothing but a good time, he's good enough to play IN COLLEGE if he can shoot that.

Now, is he good enough to play at a good D1 school? That depends on what kind of course he's playing, how he does in tournaments, etc...

There’s some pretty bad college golf. And there’s way more great players than scholarships at FBS schools.

I played with a kid two summers ago in a Texas Amateur qualifier. He shot 66 and really didn’t do anything spectacular 66 (this was before his junior year of HS). I followed him The next 18 months and he was very, very good. 6’3”, a bomber, magic hands on the green.

His best offer was Arkansas Tech.

I saw a couple McNeese golfers fire rounds in the 80s at Carter Plantation. For whatever that is worth. College golf seems to run the gambit of elite to weekend warrior.

Emerson - the older one didn’t have her first real lesson till age 6 and started playing the USKids tour at age 7... the little one - Maeve Anne Parker started around age 6...the little one studied the older on so she is a bit more natural with her skills...

Honestly as I have said before - the common thread I found among the top 24-50 girls in the world is that 95% of them did Tae Kwon Do before age 5... I had no golf ambitions for them (I’m a crappy 18 - though my brother was very good)... I just wanted TKD because I wanted them them to have the confidence that came with breaking a piece of wood...

Also - they never did any real putting till age 6... best way to get good contact is to have them break water balloons with a good golf swing... perfect gratification for a 2-5 year old kid :)

Thanks for the info - I grew up playing, but really didnt start until age 12 or so. Ive introduced it(she is 4.5) - sometimes that means an hour of playing around, sometimes 2 swings and she is done.

Id rather spend 2 hours at the course with her than 2 hours in a dance recital...prob have both in my future.

Good luck buddy - I’ve always felt like you do and sports was always my jam anyway. You are on the right track - I’d suggest the water balloons as she won’t stop at two swings ever! Also when she can focus - make sure to do individual lessons - never group ones.. get her involved in USKids if possible around age 6 and she will improve quickly if she enjoys it and her time with you :)

Of course he can. Even if those numbers are fudge it seems like hes a good player. at 15 there is so much time to keep improving for college. There are tons of colleges large and small that have golf teams.(pre covid I guess)

So If you are asking if he can play college golf the answer is absolutely. Can he play at OK St or Stanford? Maybe. Depends on how he does in tournament rounds etc.

I used to work a Jr tour and kids that were really not very consistently solid golfers would go to small schools for golf.

thanks for the feedback guys, i keep telling his dad he needs to get him more exposure.
not sure of handicap, but i know he is always playing around par depending on day/course, etc.

Wasn't sure if the sport requited commitments very early or not.

From what i know and seen, he's very consistent, just few too many putts per round

I know absolutely nothing about amateur golf but this thread is blowing my mind. I would assume anyoen as a teen that is regularly shooting about a 70 or better would be one of the best in America but clearly I'm extremely wrong. Teh guys who do get offers to high level golf schools like a UGA or Texas or whatever, what are those guys shooting as mid to late teens? And the absolute elite guys that could basically name their school and are top ~20 rated guys nationally out of HS..what are they shooting?

For boys - break 70 consistently in AJGA events and get a top Rolex ranking ...

For girls - break 74 consistently in AJGA events and earn a top Rolex ranking

If the kid is doing this and not in AJGA like he is some golf Will Hunting - then walk on and see what happens
