What is so great about golf anyway?

So I took up golf on March 27th of this year. I have several friends groups who were trying to get me playing over the last several years and finally I succumbed. A buddy let me borrow his clubs. I signed up for lessons at age 40.
What fun! Hit a ball with a stick.
And then I started making contact that actually went forward and straight. I played my first round of golf on May 2nd and shot 64, but didn’t slow others down and had the best time hanging with guys, smoking a cigar on the course, and having fun.
Then I got serious. I shot 54 a few weeks later on the same course on the same nine I played when I first when out there. And then it caught me. Chasing that feeling. Last Saturday I played 18 and shot 100. If it weren’t for a whiff I would have hit 99.
I have intercostal strain in my rib cage and can’t swing a club for another month with 10-11 weeks of full gas until I can go again.
So I ordered a Prime Putt putting mat and have Zen Golf and Golf Is Not a Game of Perfect to read in the meantime.
I’m starting BPC 157/TB-500 to heal faster and doing PT to get back out there.
What is it about this game that has hooked you? All it is is hitting a ball with a stick. But it’s so much more than that. It’s the greatest game there is!

It’s the dang, pured shot that flies pro like through the air and lands where you want it….5% of the time. lol. Always brings you back.
Or a 29 foot putt.
Or a chipped in birdie. List goes on and on

The great thing about golf is at any one swing you can be the best in the world for that moment.
When you actually step up and hit the exact shot you were wanting to and pure it off the club face there are very few better feelings.

We are all chasing ways to stay active/competitive/connected with friends. Challenging yourself is also very mentally stimulating. Golf offers the best avenue to achieving all of this.

FIFY. At least your pocketbook will be a little heavier since the injury will keep you from getting five lessons a week
I kid. But seriously, I hope you slowed down on the lessons and heal up faster than expected so you can get back on the course.

I was actually thinking about this very question this morning. Golf is great because it requires physical skill, it requires thoughtfulness and strategy, it requires a regulation of emotions, and even if you play the same course every day, it's infinitely variable. And a round of golf is typically a few hours spent in a beautiful place.

All the qualities I did not have in my early 20s. That’s why I had to sit out 40 years.

There is a lot of practice drills you can do without swinging a club. Lots of videos out there for stance, weight shift, take away start and course management. I do a lot of this and it definitely transfers to the range sessions and course.

Peeling fades
Cut iron shots that kick and roll about 10 ft to the right
Flighted wedges into greens sloping back to front that hop once and die
Bump and runs
Lagging 50 footers to gimme range
Not so great:
Rope draws that run into the trees
Toed irons that land 15 yards short
Knuckle balls out of the rough that land short but run off the back
Bladed or chunked chips
Running 8 footers 4-6 feet past the hole

The feeling when you hit a pure 7 iron pin high into a green.

It’s “the next shot”…keeps me coming back.
