Update..

Had my fitting at Club Champion. Highly recommend them and the fitter happened to be a LSU Alumn and great guy. I’m definitely not in golf shape and was worn out by the time I finished. As much as I wanted to get into a set of Mizuno JPX Line or some Pings, I was constantly better with Srixon ZX5 with True Temper XP95 R300.

I recently got the golf bug back after not playing for a few years. I have no natural talent and my iron play has always been my biggest flaw. In my heyday I would devote countless hours practicing and playing. During the summer months I would get my handicap down to a 10.

My current Irons are Mizuno MP 52s and I’ve decided to move onto a Game Improvement Iron to hopefully make golf easier on myself. So I scheduled a fitting at a Club Champion. My question is can I order individual irons say 9-6 only or do you need to buy a “whole” set? When i bought the Mizunos it came as a standard set which I think was PW-3I. I’m also thinking of going hybrids for the rest of the set.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Yes.

They will fit you into what works best with your swing.

Many sets only go to 5 or 6 iron now.

Club Champion may help you decide between hybrids and fairway woods.
They may help you figure out the lowest iron you should carry.

Everybody’s optimal bag is a little different.
The most expensive thing may be the best driver shaft for your swing.

Thanks for the response. I started taking lessons recently and according to their Trackman my Clubhead Speed with my 7I is around 88mph lol.
So I’m open to any club manufacturer and shaft option. I recently started researching if I go with real lightweight steel shaft or maybe even a graphite to try and generate some increased clubhead speed.

Club Champion will done a fine job for you.

Don't worry about the set makeup, buy what works for you.

I play with a guy that has a 10 year old set of Cleveland's irons and they all look like hybrids, really strange looking clubs.

But no matter where we play, he always shoots in the high 70's without fail. Those clubs work for him.

Enjoy.

I'm in same boat of you with swing speed. Just picked up Mizuno 921 hot metal pros with the nippon tour 105 shafts and I'm loving the lighter steel shaft. Good luck!

My current Mizunos have Nippon Pro 850GH shafts in a stiff flex that weigh around 90 grams. I started researching and now they offer a super light iron shaft that’s only 68.5 grams. But I’m planning on letting the fitting process dictate what’s best for me, I’m a big fan of Mizunos and Ping. Hopefully my numbers are good with the one of the JPX models.

Don't resign yourself to a certain club type. Let the fitting process play out. I gamed Mizuno MP60's for years and when it was time for new clubs, I was sure that they would fit me with the JPX's. I'm older (60) and not as flexible.
Surprisingly, I hit the MP20's MUCH better than the JPX's. Ended up with a combo set-up, which is more and more common.

I now have Mizuno MMC 4-5, MP20 6-P. All with Nippon 120 stiff shafts.
Enjoy the process.

Not sure if the lol was to imply that is slow, but I'm pretty sure that's a pretty decent speed with the 7i. Would that put your driver between 105-110?

I think tour average for 7i is around there, maybe 90mph.

I think you’re correct and I’m mistaken, maybe it’s 78mph. I’ll verify next weekend when I’m fitted.

Bopper50…
I got fitted with ZX5.. I only ordered 6-9 as I’m planning on going with Hybrids for my longer irons.
I’m also planning on buying new wedges, currently I have some Vokeys and also play some Ping Eye 2 Beryllium PW SW. What’s your thoughts of the ZX5 wedges?

I don't think there are any better wedges on the market than Vokeys SM8's...

No hot spots and consistent across the entire face. Best Grinds in the business.

I have DGS S 400 shafts in mine, great combo.

Definitely be data driven when you are eliminating iron heads. They'll probably get you on a single shaft fairly quickly. It'll be obvious what you should buy unless you're a sucker for sexy irons (I almost bought TMs instead of Mizzunos because of looks).

Damnit this forum has convinced me to bail on my pxg 0211s for the ZX5’s. May just go ahead and buy them online tonight. I need stiff iron shafts - any recs?

What was the rationale for not getting a pitching wedge or gap wedge with the set? I dont know of many people playing a different pitching wedge outside the set. The gap is kind of personal preference but I like to have all my full swing clubs to be the same shaft and set.

I play a blended set of the X5/X7 and my fitter told me the gap might be the prettiest club in the set. Odd.

I don’t know how they play, but the irons made by Sub 70 are some of the sexiest looking clubs out there. Sub 70. I’ve been shopping new wedges and the reviews on all their clubs are pretty impressive.

It looks like the prices on the 699 and 699 pros have gone down.
