Great, great course. Never played it, but it may be my favorite US Ryder Cup course.

Is this course really that nice? I've obviously never played it but it just didn't seem that impressive. Or worth hosting a US Open.

LACC is amazing. Much better than Riv or Bel Air IMO

I've been lucky to play a ton of great courses through work and a good friend in the golf business. Sadly, he just had twins and his golf travel has been cut down to almost nothing. So, my list for the foreseeable future...
1. Royal Melbourne West - MacKenzie was a master. Thanks to a hook up at Pasatiempo. Apparently MacKenzie courses have a bit of a brotherhood and take care of each other.
2. Oakmont - The greens are everything I imagined them to be
3. Friars Head - this is a Coore/Crenshaw masterpiece
4. Cabot Cliffs - Combined the best of Pebble and Cape Kidnappers in to one course
5. National Golf Links - probably my favorite overall track that I've ever played.
Courses that I wasn't overly impressed with...
1. Torrey Pines - pretty underwhelming outside of the location
2. Olympic Club Lake - It's a beast, but in that area I found San Francisco GC and Cal Club to be better, more memorable tracks.
3. Whistling Straits - views are great, but I just didn't like some of the quirky shite Pete Dye threw in to that design. I enjoyed Erin's Hills more than WS.
4. Spyglass - the first 5 may be the 5 best opening holes in golf, but after I thought it was a pretty mundane layout considering the land that they had to work with. Some people love it though, so to each his own.

How awesome was Winged Foot? There's a four ball tournament there every year and it's on my list

It was great. The fairways were a purple Haze.

3. BridgeMill Athletic Club - Atlanta
Played here a month ago, expected it to be a run of the mill CC community but was pleasantly surprised. Course was in exceptional shape, and had some of the better greens in the North Atlanta area.
Do you play in that area often?

No, my introduction to online forums was through golf. I used to post at a board that would have annual get togethers. I became friends with a small group in the Atlanta area and a couple guys in South Carolina. I flew out there 3/4 times for long golf weekends. One of them involved Hilton Head courses we would normally never be able to play, but a guy out there saved up invites from silent auctions over a long period of time so we could play 36/36/18 on a Friday through Sunday. It was unreal. On two of the courses, I did not feel right about taking a divot on the tee boxes. Never seen grass so perfect. At Haig, they actually checked your bag like it was a flight on the ferry to the island.
