These guys are so good

Four rounds in the 60s got a guy T59 this week on tour.
Golf is deeper in talent than ever. So many capable of sticking a tee in the ground and going low.
I recognize the Sony is not a major or an elevated event, but with the purses they have now and the talented competitors, it’s still a big deal to win any tournament.

It's a joy to watch for sure.

Give pros good conditions and greens without a lot of undulation and they will light it up.
My old home course they’d never be out of the 60’s. Cink used to play it in tournaments growing up and he never shot over par despite it being a very tight driving course. Greens were small, fast but didn’t have a lot of break on most of them.

What’s crazy is the amount of guys that aren’t even on tour capable of burning courses down. Golf is extremely deep in talent.
Always makes me laugh at some amateurs who shoot in the 70s, but believe they have the game for pro golf. Put these guys on your home course and a round in the 70s loses by 10.

I watched some of the Korn Ferry event this weekend. The difference in those guys and PGA tour are noticeable. The difference in KF guys and the plus caps I’ve played with is VERY noticeable.

Don’t forget the equipment side also. Equipment is better than ever!

Would a PGA tour pro be around plus 7?
Korn Ferry plus 5?
I wonder if you put Scheffler’s heater into GHIN if he was like plus 12?

What’s crazy to me is that as good as these guys are they are still capable of playing like crap and shooting a 78 or something.
Like a dude could go out and shoot 3 rounds at 64, then the 4th round at the same course same conditions he fires a 78, nuts.

Do these course they play have proper ratings/slope for pro tourney conditions?
Augusta is a MUCH harder course during the masters vs a normal round. Hell I remember playing Chambers bay the year before they hosted the US Open and they were building all new tee boxes behind the tips in preparation.

FCC or TP ? Went to shool with Stewart.

TP. Played in the FCC invitational every year, and pretty much every singles tournament in the area including the shoals shootout.

Gotcha. It's crazy that all 3 courses in Western side of the county when I was a kid are all closed now. FCC is a senior citizens center, McFarland is disk golf, and Sky Park is a subdivision. Blackberry is the only one now. I got me and Dad a membership at Waynesboro. It's a nice challenging 9 hole course and only 40.00 per month each. Plus they don't mind us playing slow because of my back and also let me park by the greens unless it's wet then I'll walk, or just let dad pick mine up.

Arrowhead is a field. I’d heard it closed some years ago. I was a member there for a few years. 3 of my aces were on that course.
I hadn’t heard about FCC, which really surprised me given it was one of the better courses back in the 80’ and 90’s. As much as McFarland flooded that didn’t surprise me really, that was our home course when I played for UNA.
Or Sky Park, I played there a fair bit when I was young because it was cheap. I can’t remember the guy who owned it back then, but it getting turned into a subdivision after he died doesn’t surprise me.

I grew up playing with guys like Brian Harmon and Webb Simpson and I would beat them on occasion in tournaments… I was a top 20’junior in the world at a brief moment. The difference between me and a KF guy is not big for 9-18 holes but is like 10-15 strokes over a 4 round tournament. Make that 20-25 over a four round event against PGA guys. I could go out today and break par at the American Express event even with tournament conditions. But would likely shoot E to -6 over 4 days. The winner is gonna shoot -30.
It’s crazy

Yeah I tried Arrowhead once by myself and got lost
Coundn't tell which green I was playing on some holes. Sky park was the best for kids and beginners, I guess Spring Creek took that slack. We did get RTJ though and those are nice. About 25 years ago Cink was in town for a benefit tourney at FCC. I paid 50.00 and walked 18 with him. He told me then Joe Wheeler was his favorite course to play when he comes home. Last time I was there 20 years ago he still had the course record.

I looked on Google earth, surprised Spring Creek was still there. I had forgotten about Joe Wheeler. That course was my undoing in the shootout every time. Just couldn’t play that course.
I don’t know if I still had the course record at Arrowhead when it closed, but the last time I was there that 61 was still standing. And yes, people who didn’t play it much got lost.

Yeah I never played well at Wheeler. Never could figure out the greens. It was like each one had a different speed. As far as Spring Creek my old boss Harvey Robbins spent a buttload of money at the park and in downtown Tuscumbia. He's also the one who donated the land for the RTJ complex with the stipulation that if it ever closes everything there goes back to him.

Low scores were on the easier course

That’s pretty neat bro. You ever try to Monday quality for any tournaments? Seems like you’d be good enough to potentially get hot for 1 day and maybe make it into an event.

I know a young guy who played in college. National Championship D1 team.
He got 10 starts on KF. Made one cut. So then it was “Monday qualifying.”
About 100 guys tee off that day for maybe 4-6 slots. Most of the time he shot 68 or so, but to make field you have to go lower, and then you might see a playoff of guys who shot 65 or 66.
“ According to data from "Monday Q Year in Review," the average score needed to Monday qualify on the Korn Ferry Tour is around 63.57”
