It's too much to explain on here. Go read about it or there is actually a very recent podcast from No Laying Up with the guy that invented it. But to answer your initial question in a few words, that's not really how it works.

You basically have an expected score from where you drive it, and an expected score from where you hit your second shot.
So, for example, if you’re expected to make 3 from 200 in the fairway, and you hit to 45 ft where you’re expected to make 2.
Baseline for 2nd shot (3) - baseline for putt (2) - 1 = 0 strokes gained
