Anyone ever suddenly and for no reason just lost their swing?

Went to range yesterday…. Could not get a single ball in the air. Played the mens night out scramble… worst ball striking round I have ever had. I had a 16 yr old partner(who was a 3 hdcp) drag my arse around the course. Have no idea what was going on.

Probably should get with a teaching pro for a session instead of trying to fix it yourself before you groove a bad swing.

Yes, just happened to me recently and the crazy thing is I've play way more golf these past couple years than I've ever played in the past 15.. All of a sudden I can't hit a tee shot to save my life, forget hitting a fairway wood and iron I was lucky to hit them straight or at my intended target.. 100 yards in and on green I was fine... It was the getting there part that was getting really frustrating and bad..

I think some golfers (myself included) not overly consistent or confident tend to look to YouTube for guidance when what we truly need is personal instructions suited to our individual swing and game..

What helped was going to the range and walking through all the fundamentals like I was a complete beginner.. took my 2 most comfortable clubs to hit 8 iron and 56° and just made smooth contact getting that feel back.. Then I went to clubs until I got to my Dr and 5w and just slowed down my approach and swing and just tried to make decent contact... It's still and work in progress and I'm also starting with a coach next week to get those issues addressed further..

Just gotta remember, we're just a bunch of broke dick amateur's playing a game because we enjoy it for some God only knows why reason.. But that unexplained feeling of the next great shot runs through our veins and we keep playing.. And with hiccups like this it allows one to refocus and change things (hopefully for the better) and keep on playing this game we love until we can't any further..

ETA: apologies for the wall o'text

Timing of this post is uncanny, I came here today to express something similar. In less than 6 months I went from a -12 to a -23, all tee-to-green issues and I see what's happening, but it's not easily fixable and I don't know where to start.

I can say this though, for you younger dudes.. flexibility can become a big problem around your late 40's, unless you have a stretch routine. This is my problem, I didn't stay on top of it and now I've become so stiff, my backswing is a third of what it was a few years ago. And I can't help but try to compensate by "swinging harder" which is a disaster.

Do stretch = sore all the time. Don't stretch = play like shite and hurt like hell the next morning. It fricking sucks, I'd say it's time to develop that old man game but that's just sad.

Sorry if unclear. I'm 53 and it got really bad this year. Had I started stretching in my late 40's I'd be in a lot better shape

Go back to basics.

Aim, grip, stance, posture, balance, swing, etc

Turn and swing.

Try orange whip.
Feet together drill.

For me if I get wild, it is bc I am swaying off of the ball.

Take a few weeks off and maybe whatever you're doing wrong will be gone by then.

Happens to all of us sometimes to some degree.

Been playing since I was 8. Shot mid to upper 70s to lower 80s most of my life. Lost interest with back issues and only played 5-10 rounds a year for last two or three years but can’t break 90 now. Just have no clue how I have lost all control on my shots . Last few rounds have been maybe 1-2 birdies, 3-4 pars, 3-4 bogeys and a slew of “others “

Try something I would have laughed at in my younger days. Yoga. Aggressive yoga such as P90x3. It will help in flexibility, balance, and stretching.

Had a round a few weeks ago I had 8 or 9 bladed iron shots. I probably haven’t had that many total in a year in any of the 50+ years I’ve played.

No clue why it popped up, about 10 minutes on the range fixed it. For some strange reason about an inch further away from me was my ball position than normal looked right.

Hopefully the shared sentiment amongst fellow golfers here puts your mind at ease. I think everyone (even pros) go through a period of time when "its not working". Everyone also gets out of the funk by going back to the basics and breaking down what could be going on.

"Could not get a single ball in the air" - That means that you are possibly lifting up and striking the top of the ball. Focus on staying down on the ball and hitting through it. Instead of looking at the back of the ball, look 3 inches in front of it and try to strike that point.

I recently had the same struggles off the tee box. I had enough and went and saw a pro, only brought my driver and said lets fix this. It took him about 30-35 minutes of going through drills, putting me on video, etc to determine what the problem was. My problem.....I was straightening my right knee on my backswing which was causing my right foot to raise on my downswing. This caused me to hit down on my drive rather than up. He gave me a position i needed to be in and started striking it much better.

Long story short, yes. I solved it by quitting. I want to get back but I just can’t put in the time I want to get my swing back.

I did. I was trying to murder the ball with a bad grip.

Changed grip and swing thought and it came right back. It's often the simplest of fixes.

I had a month long spat with my irons just shanking straight right. It happened as soon as my handicap dropped to 9. I had not shanked a shot in probably 7 or 8 months. I was shanking it probably 4 or 5 times a round. I’ve finally mostly recovered from that but still have the random shank right. Absolutely pisses me off when I do it.
