I know we have talked about this guy many times on this board and how his game is crap right now. I usually look at the leader board of the PGA event going on Thur-Sun if i'm not watching it and always scroll to the bottom to see what the last place guys shot. I always expect to see Smylie sitting there and sure enough, he's next to last place right now at the Traveler's. Today though, I decided to look more into his stats and see how terrible he has been and HOLY shite he's bad. Out of the 21 events he's been in this year, he's made the cut in 3 of them. Somehow he has still made over $200k this year, which probably isn't enough considering the expenses a pro golfer has. He may be mooching off his spring break buddies for some of the travel. How much longer can this guy keep his tour card? Send him to the minors and let him work on his game. /rant over.

He will lose it at the end of this season unless he finishes in the top 125.
His scoring average is 74.5 right now

To be fair, he still has endorsement deals so I doubt he is mooching off of anyone.

Supposedly part of his struggles are because he switched coaches.

Yeah he’s switching coaches and knows he’s playing bad. He is trying to take a wider backswing instead of picking the club up. Apparently the range sessions are good but it still doesn’t translate to the course. The dude has talent, you don’t end up in the final group at the masters on Sunday by being lucky, but I hope it’s like Ben An. He missed every cut I think in the season up until quail hollow and his swing finally clicked and got a W.

Someone else that switched coaches and you never heard from again was Heath Slocum. He had a decent career going in the PGA tour, switched coaches and now I don't even know if he still plays golf.

Endorsement deals typically want players to win. His biggest sponsor was Natural Light and I don't even think they are partners anymore, but I could be wrong. I just haven't seen any advertisements between the 2.

The guy has a win on Tour and is sponsored by Srixon, Natty Light and Polo. I think he can cover a plane ticket and hotel each week.

He just switched coaches a couple months ago, maybe early April. He'd been struggling for a good while before he made the switch.

Holy crap. I completely forgot about him. I grew up playing Jr. golf in Mobile while he was at USA. He was all of our “idols” when we’d see him at the range or out on the course.

I think he has status one more year because of his win, but this could be his last year.

By the way OP has no idea what he's talking about.

Done after this year. Won in 15-16 season, gives him exemption for 16-17 and 17-18

What would this do? If you’re struggling, it doesn’t matter the tour. He’d be doing the same thing on the web. At least on tour, if it clicks, you’re playing for a 7 million dollar purse

I think he just needs reps of competitive golf with a new swing to get comfortable and to trust his swing in competition.

If we assume $150/night hotel 7 nights a week for what... 25 weeks so far this season? Let’s assume 25 plane tickets at $500. That’s still less than $40k of what I assume are tax deductible expenses. So he is doing ok if he has made over $200k. It’s moot though because there’s a 99% chance his sponsors are covering all travel expenses.

That’s not how this works.

have to include taxes, caddie, agent, swing coach and whatever else there is in the entourage of a tour pro. no telling how much actually hits his pocket

but I agree that's not doing too bad, hell id trade with him

Biggest thing is about $1300 a week for caddie expenses

He spent a considerable amount of his youth in Bunkie, La also. His dad, Jack, ran several golf courses in the La/Ms area. I wouldn't be surprised to see him show up on the Champions Tour when he turns 50, and do really well...

The guys on the Web.com tour are predators. If you don't go low every week, you won't make it!

He switched coaches because he has been struggling for a couple of years.
