but I hope it’s like Ben An. He missed every cut I think in the season up until quail hollow and his swing finally clicked and got a W.

I think you're thinking of James Hahn, but I get your point.

It's kind of crazy the way your game can just completely fall apart. Happened with Brendon Todd and Steven Bowditch as well. I think there's some hope for Smylie considering how young he is, but everyone is just so good it's tough if you're not playing your best golf, let alone bad golf.

He switched coaches because he has been struggling for a couple of years

I don’t doubt that he switched bc he was struggling...but FYI, a couple of years ago was 2015/2016.

2015 he won a web.com event.
2016 he won a PGA tour event + two additional t10 finishes and a final pairing at The Masters.
2017 he finished t5 at The Wells Fargo and t12 at The Players.

Point being, he has struggled a good bit...but he hasn’t been slumming it either (excluding 2018).

He would have lost his card after last season if it wasnt for his two year exemption. He didnt fall of the face of the earth, but he didnt play all that well either.

He did drop 100 spots in the world rankings though, and wouldn't have kept his card.

It's not slumming it for us, and still made decent $, but it definitely was not a good year.

As others have mentioned he certainly has talent. 6 Top 10's and 3.5 Million Earned.

I hope he gets his swing to click with the new coach, and that mentally he isn't screwed up because of this.

He has a lot to do before his 27th birthday this November to keep his card. Pulling for him.

He's one of the least talented guys on tour.

Maybe in the last 2 years he's lost it all...

2016:

4 Top 10's
43 in FedEx
2.5 Million Earned

Official Low Round: 61 - this alone requires talent IMO

Now is he getting the most out of it? No.

Steven Bowditch as well

Idk when it started for him but I remember him on the range at Augusta in 2016. On Wednesday he stayed out there all day and couldn’t figure it out. A buddy texted me asking who I liked after being out there for the practice round. I told him to stay away from Bowditch and sure enough he shot ~+10 on Thurs. CSB

Bowditch is a surprisingly good twitter follow. He was not a Phil fan for the US Open

I mean he's more talented than anyone on the golf board but he's not talented compared to tour guys. He went out early and got hot with the putter. He was a bad college player. Right now, his best strokes gained stat is putting and he's 180th on tour. He's last on tour in strokes gained off the tee, strokes gained approach to the green, strokes gained tee to green, and strokes gained total. In 45 rounds on tour, his lowest round was 67 and that was like 8 months ago.

That wasnt the norm. He was a 4/5 guy in college and has never ranked inside the top 70 in any strokes gained stat.

This would explain the swing change IMO. He's not even getting the ball to the green in a position to shoot a good score.

Maybe he was a couple year fluke who got hot for a quick minute. Maybe he just needs to see the ball flying the way he wants it to in order to bring his confidence back. I'm not sure, but those stats are stats of a guy whose name you will forget in a couple of years.
