I'm struggling with shots that I can't take a full swing on. Specifically from about 30 yards in. Originally, I was using a 54 or 58 degree wedge and trying to flop it onto the green. That was so bad that I decided to do the bump and run with a 9 iron but even at times that's erratic. Anyone have any pointers here? Should I play the ball in the middle of my stance, back or front? Should I weight one leg or the other?

One big problem is I'm not consistent. At times I'm grabbing ground before the ball and other times I'm blading the ball. Such a frustrating shot.

Another shot I'm struggling with is when the green is elevated from my lie. At times, I don't make it up the hill and have the ball roll back down to where I started. Other times, it's hit thin and rolls dramatically away from where I need it to.

Pro tip:

Avoid leaving yourself a weird distance to the pin.

There is really no magic answer here to fix your issues other than you just need to practice more. Consistency is key on these types of shots. Make sure you're always choking up around the same point on the club, make sure the ball is always in the same spot in your stance, make sure your hands are forward, etc. Eventually, you will develop the muscle memory to achieve more consistent results.

Odd tip I got a while back

Throw a ball and try to get it as close to the pen as possible.

Then try to mimic that flight path

Assuming you aren't a complete retard with you hand eye coordination, your instincts will kick in. You might toss it over hand or under, try to roll it. You do it without thinking about it

Still have practice touch and all that

That's an interesting suggestion. I'm willing to try anything at this point. This shot alone is costing me probably 8 - 10 strokes a round without exaggerating. From 100 + out I'm probably 50/50 if I land on the green or just off the green. When I land off the green but within 30 yards (usually 10 or so yards) I'm high percentage terrible.

Ha. I've learned there is no magic answer in golf. Good points. I've been all over the place trying to find a position in my stance and hand position, so I can't say I've been real consistent. I've been changing it up on virtually every shot which I can see how that would be problematic.

I've been doing this with chips and long putts and it helps

The only shots that should cost you anywhere near that are shots that include the use of a driver or putter. If you’re leaving yourself a lot of 30 yard shots there is a bigger issue in your game. Nobody consistently hits 30 yard shots great...that’s why most good golfers avoid leaving the ball in that range.

If he drives the ball well he probably is playing from the wrong tee box.

I find myself in odd distances when I play from the old fart tees with my dad.

Hit the shot with your shoulders, not your arms. Try to "deaden" your arms.

Set the angle with your right wrist (remember the "Greg Norman Secret") and rotate shoulders.

In my opinion, chipping form can vary from person to person. I liked Clay Ballard’s tips. Look up Clay Ballard “chipping made easy” on YouTube. I keep the same motion, and adjust the club depending on where I want to land the ball. It’s easier to change the club than to change the swing.

Buy a wedge that fits this distance on full swings if it’s costing you that many shots.

What I do is I have a wedge that I know only goes x distance with a half swing. If I need less than that, I loft up and the same swing. It has helped a ton trying to take off a little here and there as a weekend warrior never works for me. A quarter swing 60 is my 35 yard shot. A quarter swing 55 goes about 45. A quarter swing 50 goes about 55 and on don I go.

As someone who has a lot of short distance wedge shots, easy fix is swing down and take a nice chunk of sod every time. It’s way better than blading the ball over the green.

Worst case scenario you hit it a little heavy and leave it short. Rather a putt from 10-15 feet than another chip from off the green.

This isn’t the pro tip answer, but it’ll save you some frustration and embarrassment

Take less loft and trust the ball on the ground, unless it’s soaking wet. It’s ok to land it off the green lowish and let to run out.

Flip shots fail most of the time. Pros don’t play them unless dire situation.

Weight on left foot. Open the club face a bit. Straight back and straight through.

Also, take two clubs every time from the cart.

I take 56 and 9 iron every time. Depending on lie and how far off the green it will determine pitch or chip.

This is probably really accurate. I play in a money round on sundays with a bunch of old fogeys who play from the whites. My average drive is 270 after roll and all. I actually pushed one 330+ from the tee box yesterday. It was a downhill fairway and I got all of it. Probably a really generous carry and roll. But my driver is easily what is keeping me in the game. When I back up to blues and tips I tend to be in that 100 yard full swing range more often.

I have a lot of short comings in my game, but the short chip shot is just where I seem to lose the most and am lost with.

Some good suggestions here which I will try. Probably try every one of them at the range. Thanks for the replies.

That's honestly hard to believe, but if true, I'd say just move up one or back one tee box.
