I know we've had a discussion about hitting draws/fades off of certain tees, but I can't find it to bump it.

But I got in a discussion this weekend and I want some other opinions. Which holes at Santa Maria do you take less than driver?

When I normally play out there, I take less on 13 and 18. 13 is a long iron short of the water. On 18, I shoot the tree on the right and hit whatever I hit that distance left of it at the green. Typically gives me 225 into the green and takes the trap, water, and big oak tree out of play.

The discussion started with an argument that it should be less than driver on 9, 10, and 16.

I'm on board with 9, I think I draw the line on 10/16. All three you hit iron/hybrid short of the trap and leave yourself mid-iron into the green. Takes away all of the trouble.

10 for sure, Even from the tips. 13 depends on the tees you’re playing. I laid up with a 3w and got a bad bounce into the water. Driver would’ve been fine

Answers will vary based on tees and club yardages.

6, 10, 12, 13.
But I still hit driver on all from the tips.

6 has lots of room for a fade miss.
10 has to be a long, perfect drive to get wet from tips.
12 & 13 have had enough time to read your shot shape that day to play it well.

All depends on feel. For me, on a normal my driver is my best club in my bag, so I will lean on it even on shorter holes. There are arguments to be made that 4, 6, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16, and 18 can all be less than driver.

For example, on 18 I feel more confident in myself to hit a driver in the small landing area between bunker and water than I do to hit a 225 yard shot over water. That is just me though.

I do not think there are any wrong ways to play any of these holes.

Typically play less than driver on most of the par 3's. Thats about it.

Will depend on the tees and the day...from the tips I'm taking less than driver on 9 and 13 in normal conditions.

From the blues, I'm taking less than driver on 4, 6, 7, 10, 13, and 18.

From the blues, yes.

I fade the ball off the tee normally. Have to start it at or over the tree line on the left to not run out of room on the right/end of the dogleg.

If I've been able to hit a draw or two earlier in the round, I'll hit driver. But otherwise, 3i -> 5i -> GW.

Makes sense.

I'm starting to hate hitting driver on 9 and 10, because it's so hard to find those fairways consistently, which prompted the question.

I'd much rather have an 8i into a green from the center of the fairway than have a 60* in with the chance of missing the fairway.

From the blues on 9, I can carry the bunker with my driver so the only issue for me is OB left...but I rarely miss left.

I think I could get away with only taking it out on 8 and 15, but I think I'd be giving up a lot with not hitting it on

1, 3, 7, 12 and possibly 14.

I feel like those 4-5 are borderline non-negotiable driver only holes. That's giving up 30-40 yards a hole without any real threat of danger, imo. I'm assuming you have the two par 5s you turn into three shot holes. What's the thought process on 1, 12, and 14?

I don't take my driver out at all here. I'm too inconsistent with it. My 3 wood has been very good to me lately and I'd personally rather play a little shorter and in the fairway, than in the trees/water/OB. This is all because I'm terrible with the driver.

I play it just a tad bit different. I take less than driver on 1, 4, 6, 9, 10, 12, 13, and 14. Probably should on 18 as well but it’s a par 5 and by then I generally say frick it.

On 18, I play it safe with the second shot. Might as well play safe with the driver too. Being agreesive on that hole is so low percentage chance of working.

I have hit driver in every driving hole, and have clubbed down on all holes except 15.

Everything is variable, depending on tees, wind, softness, how you're hitting and aggressiveness necessary. It's part of playing golf, trying to develop a fixed plan doesn't make a lot of sense imo.
