I’m having some major issues with a hooking driver and 3 wood. It is really hurting my ability to put up any decent scores right now because I start off most par 4s and 5s in the trees or OB. I have a small run down of how most of my clubs play out, so I was hoping maybe someone here would have a small fix or drill to work on to fix it or control it.

Wedges- from 80-135 yards I hit very high straight shots, and I’m usually pretty accurate from this distance.

7-9 irons- 145-170 yards I’m also fairly accurate. The shots are still pretty high but starting to show a slight draw. I’m very happy with how I’m hitting these shots and I’m still pretty accurate at this distance.

4-6 irons- 180-200 yards is where the hook starts to show up really, but with these clubs I have the hook in a spot that I can control it. I’d rather have a slightly straighter ball flight with these clubs.

3h, 3w, & D- these 3 clubs are completely screwed up right now. All 3 are a complete duck hook.

I used to be very consistent with the driver, but I somehow completely lost the swing.

I believe I may be taking the club back too far inside, but not completely sure. I know it’s tough to give help without seeing a swing, but I’m just looking for any possible suggestions to try on the range.

UPDATE:

Played 9 holes yesterday after work. Probably should have hit the range first, but what fun is that.

Just a couple of things I changed:
1. I stood up just a little bit straighter when addressing the ball. This made me much more comfortable at address and also picked my hands up just a little.

2. Really focused on hitting the inside of the ball. This resulted in a slice a couple of times at first. Then I really focused on an inside out swing and got a really nice ball flight. It will take some time to really get a one way ball flight with the driver, but this was a big step in the right direction.

3. Did all of the same things with the 3 wood and hit it perfect multiple times.

4. Standing up straighter seemed to flatten my irons on the ground a little more (rather than being tilted up). This turned my hook with those clubs into more of a fade, so I have to tweak my irons just a tad.

All in All everyone's advice was very helpful and gave me something to come back to when fixing my swing on the range. All of my ball flights were much closer to center line, so now I just have to learn how to line up to my target correctly now that my ball flight is a little different.

Thanks for the help gentlemen

Try to make contact with the inside of the golf ball. Pull hook usually comes from casting and hitting the outer half with a closed face.

Makes sense. Sounds like a problem I use to have with with my baseball swing when I would slump.

How old are you?
Is your swing slowing down?
Started exercising and your swing speeding up?

Slow down your backswing.
Focus on ball contact and swing plane.
You may even look at a fitting for your longer clubs.

Check your ball position. When I hook my wedges, the ball is too far forward

Mid 20s and I believe my swing speed has sped up some since I last had it checked at about 102 mph.

I have a regular flex 45.5 inch shaft.

Sounds to me like hips stop turning, and your arms take over... this is my miss.

Try standing taller, and opening up just a touch to make sure your hips are clearing.

Weaken your grip(turn one or both of your hands counter clockwise) as much as you need to until the driver begins to fade, then find your neutral grip.....

^ This.

Also, your shafts are probably too whippy for your driver swing speed. If you're at 102, you need a stiff shaft.

The other thing to consider in your irons is your lie angle... Since the problem seems to exacerbate in the longer irons, I'd bet your clubs are too upright for your swing.

How tall are you? Are your arms a little long for your height?

I'm short but my arms are slightly longer than average and I was fitted 2-3* flat.

I can pretty much guarantee your arms are moving out, even if only slightly at the top. You need to take any thought of hitting the ball with your arms from the top out of your swing. Feel like your arms are limp and you’re trying to throw them through the ball with your pivot, if that makes any sense. Any attempt to hit at it will bury the club a foot behind the ball

Actually, strengthening the grip is probably more helpful. The way you start the swing isn’t how you hit the ball. Gotta think dynamically.

A lot of good insight on possible causes (ball position, arms casting, hips slowing down) but all lead back to where the club is making contact with the ball. Without any video for us to go on start with trying to make contact on the inside (just like staying inside in baseball to drive up the middle) and a lot of these other problems, if present, will solve themselves.

Aren't you the same douche that believes you can't swing too far from the inside?

yes, he is the one that has to keep tees and coins in his left pocket so he doesn't scrape his knuckles through impact

FFS! Probably best that he doesn't give swing advice...

No, dumbass. I’m the douche who said you can’t bring the club too far inside as long as you keep your spine angle and don’t try to hit from the top.

Raymond Floyd, John Daly and Sam Snead say hi.

I was on my way to get fitted for a new shaft last week, but I decided to go to the range instead of spending that money. I am now thinking this is exactly what I need to do, along with staying inside the golf ball.

I'm 5'11 with avg. arm length, so I figured standard length irons would work just fine.
