What gets into a persons head to pick up a ball that is not their own ball?

I’m not talking about a ball deep in the woods or a ball found on an empty course. I’m talking about a ball in a fairway on a packed course.

Today, some old guy picked up my ball in my fairway. I saw him. I was walking and about 150yards away. I confronted him. He lied. He said he dropped a tee. I could see a ball in his pocket.
As a parting shot, he gave me an FU and called me an a-hole

WTF is wrong with people?!

His buddy bought me a beer after the round and gave me a Prov1.

There’s an older gentleman at LVC that is notorious for this.

I have experienced this at the best courses. I'm not sure what gets into a guy to blantly do this.

It’s mainly an “old guy” thing . . . They can’t help themselves.

Just keep the ball in your fairway

I'm glad someone else started this thread. This happens WAY too much at Webb and it seems like it's happening more often. How stupid are people? The course is packed and the holes are side by side. What makes them think they're not picking up/hitting someone else's ball?

It's not just old dudes either. It's everyone.

We have a man with dementia.

He picks up any ball he sees.
We just replace and go on.

It is a sad situation.

I saw this happen at old Howell park playing with a former LSU football player. We watched a guy pick up his ball in the middle of the fairway. He kindly ask him to give him his ball back. The guy said he didn't pick up any ball. My friend asks him again and said we both saw you pick it up. The guy then said "I'm a cop, if I said I didn't pick it up I didn't" while pulling out his badge. My normally cool friend loss it. He started walking up yelling "all that means is you are about to get your a$$ whipped with a badge in your pocket". I started laughing and the cop started shaking and gave him his ball back.

The worst spot for this is left of 10 fairway at Audubon. Guys coming up 18 fairway will grab those on the regular

The thing that bothers me the most is they don't even look to see if it's their ball. Just scoop it up

Yea it happened 4 times in single round to my friend and I last time out. I refuse to play there again for the rest of the year.

It happens a lot. I'll pick them up out of the woods and save them for risky shots, but never when there's a remote possibility that it belongs to someone playing.

The damn marshal at City Park picked one of mine up a few months back. He gave me a replacement ball at the end of the round and apologized.

My $.02 is that it's a symptom of the influx of golfers over the last couple of years. Sure, some of it is seasoned golfers picking up balls, but those of us that have had golf balls claimed by others generally have more awareness to not touch a golf ball without checking to see if it could potentially be someone else's.

I'm not spending time looking for other peoples balls on the course, I barely have enough time to find mine.

Have had it happen to me a few times and it usually only happens after really spectacular tee shots which makes it doubly infuriating...
And at my home course to boot..
