I got started listening to podcasts, in general, over the last year. I found the foreplay guys shortly after and I find them to be extremely funny and entertaining. I like listening to their player interviews because they make the pros seem like normal people instead of golf robots. I think their videos are ok. I like the scramble videos because it reminds me that because of the handicap system literally anybody can be competitive against anybody. And they’re just entertaining. Frankie does get on my nerves because he’s a little soy boy that likes to talk shite.

Then I found the NLU guys through their strapped series. I think that is a fantastic idea of a way to represent the everyday golfer who isn’t rich and just wants to go play with their buddies. I enjoy their tourist sauce series because of the gambling they do. I think it could be fun to do that with my group that I go on trips with. However, I find them to be extremely pretentious when it comes to their podcasting and that turns me off to them. They come off as old man golf media and better than the regular guy because they’re sponsored and they have access that you and I do not.

While I enjoy both for different reasons, I enjoy the foreplay guys more. They just remind me of myself and feel like they’re still pinching themselves that they get the chance to have the job they have.

TL;DR I prefer the Foreplay guys because they’re funny and remind me of the everyday golfer. Who do you prefer and why?

I prefer NLU overall but like them both in different ways. I think the NLU podcast is alot better than Foreplay, however the Foreplay guys have good content and the Barstool classic is a brilliant idea. Overall both are entertaining and good for the growth of golf.

I listen to both, don’t really prefer one over the other. Haven’t ever gotten the pretentious vibe from NLU

Got any reasons for that assessment?

I always felt like the foreplay guys would go off topic with a joke and then each of them would say their own version of the joke and laugh at themselves and then waste 10 minutes before getting back to the topic

The foreplay guys wore me out quick. I don’t know what it is, but they drive me insane.

I like both. Agree with above poster. Both are good for different reasons and they can coexist.

Foreplay guys are only funny because they get Kis on there and he talks mad shite to them. I got sick of them pretty quickly and their immaturity. That being said Kis is the fricking man!

NLU is definitely better

I tried foreplay pod once or twice and just didn’t like it. Didn’t give it that much of a chance to be fair. Really like NLU stuff. Foreplay YouTube content has for sure been better recently. Still prefer NLU.

Honestly just don’t really like Riggs and Frankie that much.

We've had this conversation a few times, but don't know if I've ever got on the stump for The Shotgun Start. Hands down the best gold podcast out there, imo

Foreplay just doesn't do anything for me. I don't get the sense that Frankie or Trent ever have anything funny or insightful to say. It's just a lot of, "could you break 120 from the tournament tees at Augusta?" or "bro, that shot Spieth hit was so sick".

The NLU guys are smart, witty, informed. During the shutdown I think I watched every Tourist Sauce 3 or 4 times.

I don't listen to either podcasts but I like both of their YouTube content.

The best interviews I have heard are from Subpar and it isn't close.

I consume both in different ways. For podcasts, I much prefer the NLU guys. I just think they have more insightful things to talk about than Foreplay. I will agree that they come off as a bit pretentious at times, and lately Tron has been getting old for me. His go to position always seems to be negative.

I have started to enjoy some Foreplay Youtube videos, but it's mostly Riggs stuff and the scrambles. I really can't stand Lurch, and I don't think he brings much to any of their videos.

I'm also giving some other golf podcasts a go this week while I work. There's not much else going on with sports, so those other podcasts have dried up. I'm trying Golficity, and it's decent so far. I will have to give Shotgun Start a try.

ETA: Even if you don't like the Foreplay guys, their latest pod is an interview with Butch Harmon that is good simply because of Butch. It also made me realize one thing that bothers me about Foreplay, and it's mostly Frankie that does it. He drops so many unnecessary fricks into his comments and questions. Usually, language doesn't bother me at all, but it just seems so out of place when you are interviewing someone that it drives me crazy.

They’re so much different and appeal to completely different audiences. I find NLU to be boring but maybe that’s because they don’t veer off topic as much as Foreplay, and given the leverage Foreplay has with Barstool, they’re able to put out better content more frequently than NLU. I keep up with both but enjoy Foreplay more, probably b/c I’m younger and have a more immature sense of humor

Have not listened to NLU.

Recently started consuming some Foreplay stuff.

Started out watching the scrambles. I enjoyed them for what they were. Really liked watching celebs and pros play against these "regular" guys.

Then started consuming more barstool content outside of Foreplay. more than anything, I enjoy the sheer volume of decent content they put out. I can really understand the cult like following they have.

lastly, I've started listening to Foreplay's podcasts. While I enjoy listening to the players they have on, I just don't think these guys are enjoyable to listen to.

- Yes, they go off topic quite a bit. talking about stuff from 4-5 years ago and do nothing to bring new listeners up to speed.
- They are pretty smug about their brand (Dave's Brand), which is fine, but not everyone will bend the knee just because you are a sub-brand under Dave Portnoy.
- Lastly, they seem like completely different guys on the podcast than they do on the scrambles. I think this is what turns me off the most. They are 4 mediocre, at best, golfers. Which is somewhat enjoyable to watch in the scrambles. They seem humble, willing to learn/take tips, aware of their own abilities, and overall regular guys.
Then you turn the podcast on and they seem like they are some sort of podcast/golf journalist gods. We are regular guys, you don't like what we say, Frick You! you interpreted it this way, Frick you. Don't wanna play in our classic, Frick you! Do you know what it takes to put on a tournament? Frick you.
It's like, jeez guys, you are cool, but if you can dish out criticism then you need to expect to get some in return. And maybe use it to better your golf podcasts.

TLDR: a bunch of 15 handicaps, that have minimal golf industry knowledge. They think they're opinions are gold and if you disagree with their take, Frick you.

I actually posted this on here a few weeks ago. I've heard Riggs say he was a 5 and Lurch say he is a 4.2 I balked at Riggs at first because he just doesn't seem to play that well in the scrambles. But, his stuff he posts from Arizona makes me think he may be better than I thought. With Lurch, I just can't believe it. He seems to constantly be surprised when he hits a good shot. For a guy who is supposedly averaging 76 on his best 8 days, I can't see it.

If you're giving shotgun start a go, you need to find shotgun start nicknames on Twitter. Give it a skim before your first listen. A large portion of it is inside jokey. The golf content is good, but it takes a little bit to catch up to the nicknames. Once you have the nicknames down, the comedy really picks up to match the golf takes.

For example- They call The Senior PGA presented by Kitchain Aid the Kitchen Aid Stand Up Mixer bc all the guys on the champions tour use broom putters. Why they also call Scott McCarron The Anchorman. But if they randomly drop "The Stand Up Mixer" into conversation, it's takes a minute to catch on. But once you have the jokes, you're golden.

I much prefer the NLU content to the Foreplay stuff. I wanted to like the Foreplay stuff, but it just seemed like too much middle school juvenile humor for me.
