Crane spent a fortune on Memorial Park Golf. I'm sure he will not like to be relegated to the Tier 2, although the Houston stop isn't a priority for the top of the Tour.

They have a women’s major.

what are you talking about. This entire exchange was based on me not being so sure the top players care about the schedule being more limited. Where did I complain there wouldn't be grinders anymore?

I've more or less said this already

They're already rich. They don't grind anymore. Nothing will change for them. This is where you tell me why they would want to grind when they don't already. For more money players of that level will barely notice? You basically disagreed with me questioning whether they care only to agree with me saying nothing will change for them. Maybe pick a lane

There’s like 15-20 guys that already don’t need any more money. The other 100 in tier one will be thrilled to play for more money. Ben Griffin, the 18th best player in the world, has been very open about this.

The Kiz line from a few years ago

“If you don’t think you can win at these places, why do you keep showing up?”

“Because they give away a lot of money for 20th”

Yeah Kiz said that when he was playing in tournaments with 6 million dollar purses. He also stopped "grinding" a long time ago. In his prime he was playing ~25 events a year. 18 tour stops + 4 majors + Tour championship is basically the same thing as Kiz was doing and those tournaments didn't pay nearly as much as they will moving forward. And the question he responded to was about playing at courses that didn't suit his game and where he would struggle to win. It wasn't about him playing a ton of events each year.

When you have 18 events, all with 20 million dollar purses, that changes the game in a huge way. And that doesn't even include the majors and Tour championship. This also doesn't stop guys from playing in DPWT tournaments if they're chasing tens of thousands of dollars

#120 on Tour right now has won $21 million in his career just on the PGA Tour. The top 120 guys are almost all rich dude.

I mean, yeah that’s rich, but that guy certainly wants more money.

A guy like Joel Dahmen is on his 10th year as a pro. He’s a certified Tour pro, made $14 million. Certainly nothing to scoff at, but it ain’t like the dude is buying a yacht either.

And by the way, no 120 on Tour at this very moment is Jimmy Stanger who’s made like $1.5 million his whole career

#120 on the money list is Mackenzie Hughes

89 guys have already earned a million or more on Tour this year. Now imagine what those numbers look like if they more than double what's available to win on Tour all year. You think a majority of players will care they can't go chase $40k at the Zurich for a 20th place finish?

exactly. This new model is pandering to the elite players who don't need the money at all.

I looked at the fedex cup

Mackenzie Hughes, great example of a guy that would go play for more money. Made $21MM in a decade as a pro. Awesome living. Not really generational wealth after expenses.

Look, I’m not saying the money is a good idea or not. It’s just totally indifferent to the argument. Out of all the things you can bitch about regarding the new and evolving Tour, the purses are so far down the list.

Playing on the tour isn't a charity. As a viewer, why would we care if these guys can pay their bills or not? I'd rather they incentivize these guys to make it to the top level and stay there.

I don't think it is when you're talking about what the push back will be from the majority of Tour players, or at least those that the Tour will actually listen to. That's all I was arguing about. I don't necessarily think a majority of the players will push back too hard with the money being proposed. That seems to be the central reason for all these changes, money. No one was complaining about the Tour's structure until Phil Mickelson and Greg Norman started talking about the Tour hoarding money. Ever since then it's seemingly been all about how the Tour can get more players more money and get them to play in more of the same events. Enter signature events with big purses, then make those signature events their entire tour schedule. I don't know how you can have a discussion about the changes and money not be a huge part of that conversation

It’s just so far past that in my opinion. The top guys have been getting their money and will continue to do so. Now it’s how to build a maintain a for profit entity and entertainment product.

The 3M and the Rocket and the Cognizant suck, there’s no question about that. You can’t keep running these bad events out there that no players show up to and nobody watches and ask those sponsors to pony up the same amount as Genesis or RBC or whoever.

Is this the best model to remedy that? I don’t necessarily think so. But keeping on keeping on ain’t it either

10 of the current top 20 and 5 out of the top 10 in FedEx standings went to the Rocket last year.

You're basically saying any event that doesn't have scottie and/or Rory is an event not worth keeping.

That’s what Rocket said with the current model since the event is ending after this year.

Does it have a place? Maybe. Does it support a $15 million a year sponsorship fee? Obviously not as them, travelers, farmers, Honda, etc. etc. have all declined to renew

It sounds like the Track 1 guys won’t be allowed to play down to Track 2

The track 2 guys will be fighting for $4 million dollar purses which sounds like big money until you realize the Internet Invitational is putting up the exact same amount as the PGA Tour's new Track 2 field events like the ISCO Championship and Corales Puntacana. Those are the smaller golf purses.

A lot of the signature events this year are at 20 million plus so there is going to be an awful rude awakening for a lot of golfers. You think Patrick Reed and Brooks right now are kicking themselves for leaving LIV while they are relegated to Track 2 status fighting for a $720k first place win when they are used to fighting for a $3.2 million first place win?

All of those private planes that landed in New Orleans for the Zurich will be out of commission going forward as these guys hope on Breeze Air to make it to play in Des Moines or Boise.

Brooks will easily be on Track 1 lol. He's currently 73rd on the FedEx standings.

This doesn't start until 2028. Doesn't make your statement wrong about him making it easily, but this year won't have a bearing. Reed will also have plenty of opportunity next year to get on the top 120.

True.

And for that reason I really really doubt Reed and Koepka will regret leaving LIV considering that LIV will have ceased to exist by the time this is implemented.

Why bring Tiger out for this press conference? Not exactly the poster boy for sound decisions. I’m a huge Tiger fan but he should’ve sat this one out.

The golfers are multimillionaires, young, married, with kids. They want to spend more time with their families. Athletes like Tiger, Mahomes, Brady, and Jordan are rarities, those with a burning desire to be the best of all time even when they already achieved generational wealth.
